Texas Ranger Museum in Waco is a good stop. Also, if you're a fan of the "Fixer Upper" show on HGTV, Chip and Joanna Gaines"s Magnolia Market complex is also located in Waco. Further down Hwy 6, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located in College Station. At the intersection where hwy 6 meets US290 south of College Station is Fraziers Concrete Heaven. It has about 5 acres of concrete statues, yard and garden ornaments. They've got everything you can imagine from full size horse statues to bird baths, plus lots of other stuff.
I just remembered one potential problem. Check a traffic app before heading into Houston. There is lots of construction on 290 driving into Houston and if the traffic is stopped, you might be better off to head on down to I-10 and come in from the west.
