After researching giant trucks for a while I decided to check the specs on a new 2500.
  • 18000lbs max towing
  • 3,534 max payload
  • 765 max torque

My trailer is rated at 15000 max and 2200 over the bed.
Starting price 33,000.

What am I missing? Seems like a no brainer but that just may be the case. If I only had one.

2,200 seems light - it's most likely the dry pin wight. At 15,000 gross I'll bet the actual pin weight will come in more like 3,000. Still within specs but getting very close once you figure in passengers and the weight of the hitch itself.

Looks like you are using web specs.  I think you have quoted the payload of gas engine and the max towing and torque of a Diesel.  I think if you pay a visit to the local dealer and check the sticker on the trucks you will find the diesel 2500 has less that 2400 payload and a full loaded on down around 2100 lbs.  A lot of if not most of 3500 single wheel diesel don't have a payload over 3500 lbs.

That 5er would not pull well with a less than 15% pin weight.  Most 5er dry have around 19% to 20% dry pin weight and usually has a 3% creep ending up between 22% and 23% so at 23% you would have a pin of around 3450 pin weight.  My 5er weights in at 13,600 and has a 3100 pin.

For about another $800-$1000, you can get a truck just like the 2500, but in the 3500 version.

You are believing advertising hype.  BAD IDEA

That max payload assumes a truck with a gas engine, no options, lightest body possible.  It is NOT real world!!

Max towing assumes 300# passengers, 100# of options and the factory tow hitch.  It is NOT real world.

A 15,000# FW will have a pin wt in excess of 3,000#.  Your number must be an empty camper, again ad hype.  NOT real world.

$33,000 will get a gas motor, reg cab long bed with NO OPTIONS AT ALL.  Not the real world.

In the real world, a 2500 SD truck will not pull a 15,000# FW.  Way too much weight for that truck.  Spend an extra $1,000 for the identical 3500 and get a MUCH better tow vehicle.

I had a gas 2014 Silverado 2500 HD, and struggled with my FW which weights 12,500.  The door sticker is different than the web info.  I traded it for a 3500 SRW with 4070 payload.  No problem. Get a 3500 truck.

Thanks for you input. I'm now planning to wait until I actually retire to buy the truck, 3 years off. We're happy in the campground we're living in and the need to go camping elsewhere isn't high on our list right now. I'm going to keep saving and buy what I really need and feel safe and comfortable in while staying debt free.
