Working with a relative who has a tough time getting her fingers around the guitar neck ... I suggested using a piece of foam under, and muting, the lowest (top) two strings. Most guitar chords can be played with just the highest four strings, which happens to be the same tuning of a baritone ukulele.

Use (A) or (D) shape and just slide it up/down the neck. Also make sure she it not trying to use thumb for top string. Bad habit.

No it is not a bad habit, just a different way of playing. Jimi Hendrix uses his thumb constantly.

OP said his friend had trouble getting her fingers around the neck. In her case, using the thumb for the top string is not a good option.
