Hi all,

Happy Thanksgiving,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this.

I am looking for recommendations for a bike carrier for 2 bikes, looking at one to attach to our 2004 Ford F53 hitch.

We already carry 2 Kayaks inside our rig so the bikes would need to go outside.

Do you take yours off if not carrying bikes?
 
We use the Saris Freedom 2-bike. We leave the rack on the hitch when the bikes are off. The center bar folds down so that we can lift the back hatch for access. We like that the weight of the bikes is on the tires, instead of the frame like other racks. We bought a Saris bike cable and lock. Cable is long enough to go through both front tires, the frames and the center bar of the rack. We also have the Saris locking hitch pin to keep the rack on the CRV.

I like the fact it shows it mounted on a Toyota 4 runner which is my daily driver :)

We do have a Schwin bike rack in the garage which I have never used as it feels so flimsy.
 
Use to have one that the bikes mounted on the cross bar. If you have a large boy and a short girls bike to mount. It's hard to find a good way to mount them without each getting scratched.

Now we use a Thule hitch mount. The one that the wheels sit in trays.  I got it cheaper then what is in the link at the local bike shop.

Great recommendation.

My monster is a bit bigger than my wife's so wheel mounting makes sense.

Might be a good rack, but at considerably more $$$ than Thule or Yakima, both who make excellent racks, I have a hard time justifying the cost.
 
We just bought this a week ago https://www.rei.com/product/854828/yakima-holdup-2-bike-hitch-rack REI had a good sale going on.

Still haven't gotten the hitch welded on the trailer, but we are using it tomorrow with the truck to bike at a nearby state park. We both have step through bikes, so we needed one where the wheels were supported rather than a top frame member. The reason for the Yakima instead of the comparable Thule was the Yakima is a couple of inches higher from the hitch, a real advantage for where we live; the streets have huge dips because they use the streets as storm drains.

Yep pricy. I've been a Thule fan for longer than I can remember. And a Yakima fan before that. But I read a LOT of reviews before buying the Kuat and I went with the Kuat. Especially with the way it snugs up the wobble out if the mount. I also like the built in bike repair stand. Made a breeze out of cleaning and lubing the bikes. But depends if it is worth it to you. Also Outdoor play has 20% off right now....
 
Maybe this thread is old enough to be considered stale (and hopefully if that's the case, OP, you got something you love!), but I wanted to throw in my two cents for a Thule.  We had to have hitch-mounted because I'm too short to reach anything we put on the roof  ;D

I have a T2 ("Classic" as they now call them), on which I have carried everything from my kid-at-college-who-can't-be-trusted-with-nice-things' bike all the way up to my fancy triathlon bike and not once have I ever been concerned about the safety or stability of anything on the rack.  It's expandable from two bikes to four, as well.

We carry giant mountain bikes for 6'4" people and tiny fat-tire bikes for 5'3" people, and really like the adjustability and flexibility of the design.  We were very concerned about racks that rest the bikes on structurally weaker points of the frames, and the T2 platform allowed us to not worry about that at all.
