To help justify that loop into Kansas you might as well make a stop at the Kansas Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson.

And while you're in Hutchnson, be sure to go across town to the Cosmosphere.  A planned one day stopover there turned into 3 days for me.

It's a world class space museum documenting both the US and Soviet space programs, and the backstory about how it came about and how they got some of their exhibits is as impressive as the museum itself.

Inexpensive in town camping is available at the Fairgrounds, except during the Kansas State Fair.
 
And, if you're going to Hutchison, you may want to consider taking US 50 through Kansas into Colorado, and dropping down into New Mexico. Some interesting historical sites await you on that route.

Believe it or not, the barbed wire museum among other things
