Ford Fusion
« on: January 03, 2017, 08:22:44 PM »
I had a Ford Fusion 2.7 ecoboost Platinum last week for a rental and it was a really nice car and got 30+mpg on the freeway and was fun in the sport mode but mileage did suffer. The big thing is it can be towed 4 down. Just mentioned it because fewer and fewer cars can be towed 4 down and I got a chance to drive it instead of just looking and reading.

I was quite impressed with the car. Go look on line at the options, of course the rental didn't have the auto park or a couple outher options. I wish the RV had back up assist and auto park.  ;)

FWIW ? We have a 2011 Fusion SE. 49K and Not One Problem. 35 MPG's Highway, 25+ around town. For a 4 cylinder.. it has Plenty of power. Handles real sporty, with a very comfortable ride.

I've had Ford do all the maintenance.. Probably one of the Best cars we've owned.

I think my next toad will be a Ford.
Ford puts out a yearly towing guide and it also goes into detail about vehicles that can be towed behind a motor home.  Ford 2016 RV & Trailer Towing Guide for both towing & being towed.
They have guides going back to 2002.  http://www.fleet.ford.com/towing-guides/

2016 its on page 11 Four-Wheel-Down Towing  & page 12 Dolly-Towing.

What does towed 4 down mean? What are the advantages of this kind of towing vs.the other kind?

4 Down means all 4 wheels on the ground.  This requires a base plate on the toad (towed vehicle), a tow bar, toad brakes and toad lights.  It MAY require other modifications.  That is what this discussion is about, because many vehicles are NOT towable 4 down.

Other towing methods include using a tow dolly.  This is fine for FWD cars, but requires a tow dolly, somewhere to store the dolly when camping, and is considered by many less convenient and harder to do.  This also adds the weight of the dolly to your GCW.

Some AWD, 4WD and RWD can not be towed by either method.  For them, towing with all 4 tires on a trailer can also be used.  Either open or enclosed trailer is okay, but both add even more weight and inconvenience.
