Winegard Carryout G2+ with Power Inserter with solar??
« on: February 21, 2017, 03:01:55 PM »
We have the big awkward satellite dish and our own receiver with Direct TV.  We are considering purchasing the G2 Carryout but I am wondering how much power this unit takes. We have 160 watts on roof, with controller and a 600 watt inverter from Go Power Solar Installed. I know the TV does not use much power, but someone mentioned the "receiver" does and then if this unit also uses power... We like to boondock and maybe catch an hour or so of TV without generator... but maybe not... Any ideas, suggestions, etc. ! thanks!!!

It takes very little and only needs power while finding the satellite, less than 5 minutes. After the satellite is found disconnect the power.

Antenna takes some power all the time for preamp/tuner in the antenna. Use is higher while searching. Power use is not very high.
Note that you will not receive HD from DirecTV using the G2, only SD.

Thanks, I know about the HD but not much we can do about it.... as we already have Direct TV at home... now to find one for a reasonable price! ha... Have not found one for less than 579.99....

Good to know about the use of power or little use of power. Enjoy boondocking without the generator!

As was stated before, simply unplug after the satellite is acquired.  That will also stop it from searching when someone walks in front of it.  The power for the LNA comes from the receiver.

It is the DVR (receiver) that takes the power.  I have Dish Network and the DVR pulls about 5-7 amps of 12V battery power operating via the inverter.  This in not counting the power the inverter consumes by just being on.  That varies by the inverter and the size of the inverter.  My Magnum 2000 watt inverter pulls about 2 amps when it is on and NOT powering a 120V AC load.

There isn't much you can do to get around the receiver requiring power.  But maybe a dedicated inverter just for the Receiver & TV would do away with some of the static load (microwave for instance) and overhead.

Terry, did you buy a refurbished one???? We were wondering about that?

I did...it looks new but came in a plain cardboard box.

Refurbs are the t expensive?  Wow.

I guess I'll be sticking with my home made stand and an old SD dish I got for free.  The compass was $7, the PVC pipe was $15, and the sat meter was $75.  I use it when the rooftop dish can't see through trees.
