I recently bought the top rated dash cam and sold it after a few weeks to buy one with a built in rear camera. It also clips over the existing rear view mirror so it is not such a tempting target to thieves.

Whatever you do, get a dashcam with a built-in gps. If you ever need it for proof of an occurrence, the dash cam's video will have a record of the position it occurred. A dedicated gps unit with a bulit-in dashcam should do the same.

Be a careful driver...the GPS versions also usually log your speed ;) . That can be used against you.

If you are going to install a dash cam you darn well better be a careful driver. You are always on TV. :)

I've  known a lot of very careful drivers that "were just staying with traffic" or speeding to use the correct word. 8)

Then I don't think they are very careful. Speeding is dangerous no matter what excuse you use.

Garmin now makes a Drive Assist unit that is a GPS/Dashcam combination.
It is portable i.e. can be moved from vehicle to vehicle, and removed from sight
when vehicle is parked.  Kind of pricey, but it is not a bad option.  I am likely going
to get one this summer.

That's pretty sharp. I didn't see where it shows things like overpass heights though. I wonder how specifically RV friendly it is.

I looked at the two recommendations and neither will work for me. I already have a GPS navigation built into the dash ad a friend has the othe one and does not work well. I am trying to find one that will fit well with a huge windshield.

We bought a Cobra dash cam from Costco a couple of years ago.  Still work fine.  It does a few interesting things.

If I honk the horn it automatically saves the current file so it won't be deleted automatically.

If it senses a sudden change in G force it locks the file.

It detects motion and will begin recording if someone walks by in it's view.  It also stops recording if nothing moves in its view for 30 seconds.

I think every frame it records has longitude and latitude and a time stamp.
