1 Night between Dallas & Las Cruces
« on: February 06, 2017, 03:49:15 PM »
We are traveling west from Dallas, TX to Las Cruces, NM taking I-20 to I-10. Do you have any recommendations for a one night stop about halfway?  We saw the Pilot/Flying J at Big Spring, TX, but prefer a campground rather than a truck stop. But if not any really good recommendations, then we'll stay at the Pilot.

When headed to New Mexico on I-10 we stop at Balmorhea, Texas State Park.  Looks like a bit of a stretch from Dallas.  We stop there first night out going west from Austin.

There is a Walmart in Big Spring, and 4 more in Midland/Odessa which are listed as allowing overnight parking.   Call the store and tell them your are passing though and wanted to check to be sure you could park in your RV overnight.  Usually the person answering the phone will know if O/N parking is allowed.  Just park on the outer edges of the parking lot.

Much quieter than truck stops.

I always use Google Earth to view the satellite view of the store and surrounding neighborhood to see if the parking lot and access is suitable for my needs.

Last spring, we stopped at Balmorrea State Park and found it to be a very nice, quiet facility with hard surface sites and good amenities. And, it's cheap. Your only problem will be the distance from Dallas. We pulled in late but still had no problem finding a good spot.
