A quote on another thread got me to thinking about how much I enjoyed reading Popular Science and Gus Wilson's Model Garage while I was growing up.

The entire 140 year publication run of the magazine is available as a searchable online archive:

Gus Wilson's Model Garage started in 1925 and has it's own archive:

Good thing I have unlimited Internet access at home.  <g>

Dad kept all his Popular Science, Popular Mechanics and Mechanix Illustrated going back to the 40's, I spent hours reading them and particularly enjoyed Model Garage. I used them as inspiration to build soapbox racers some of which were spectacularly unsuccessful. ;D

I started reading Popular Science when I was in elementary school in the late '50s, and continued until I went to college. It's where I found topics for many English compositions and public speaking presentations. I don't suppose either composition or public speaking are taught in elementary schools today.
Besides the features, my favorite regular articles were Gus Wilson's Model Garage and Wordless Workshop.
The most memorable features for me were the ones about "Project Mohole", an attempt to drill a hole clear through the Earth's crust and into the mantle, and the Mont Blanc tunnel.
Which reminds me. I have a grandson who's getting to the age where he'll enjoy it.
