I thought we were going to get a slight social security increase
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:17:58 PM »
We just looked at our bank statement for Feb and both my wife and my amount was the exact same as last year.

Any one know why they are hood winking us ????

Maybe throw a crumb to us and then take it back in taxes ?

I would be curious to know if anyone actually got an increase ?

Careful. This topic could ignite an immediate political debate that is really not wanted on this forum.

We got about 0.3% raise and the Medicare cost raised by the same mount.  The net value deposited in your account was the same. At least that was what I understood to be the case.

I'm with Judway -- we got a slight raise, but medicare increased exactly the same amount, thus leaving the deposit (not the total on paper) exactly the same amount as last year.

The medicare costs actually rose more than the SS increase.  For the people who have medicare come out of SS the raise in medicare is limited to the amount of the SS increase.  These are the lucky people and my husband is one of them.  When I get ready to take medicare my premium will be much higher than his due to his being locked in to SS increases.

I would have to look at my statements but this is a true story;

My mother, who was head of accounting for a multi-million dollar research and develement company. once turned down a raise.. WHY.

Well it would have put her in a higher tax bracket and resulted in LESS money in the pay check.

You may have done like that. Also though they give us a few dollars increase.. They also increased the Medicare preminums for those of us who have no choice.

Yeap - the SS increase got wiped out by the Medicare B increase. The "B" premium increase actually exceeds what just about everybody got in their 0.3% SS raise, but by law the premium increase cannot cause a net decrease in your SS income, so they balance out to "zero".

Thanks Gary,

I recall reading back in November that we were going to get a slight increase, but the article didn't say anything about Medicare B wiping it out.

Thankfully we have our MRD from our IRA each year to add a few bucks to the bank account

That happened to me once, no fantastic salary but the anual pay raise resulted in a smaller take home check.

Sounds like you need to call the person that is supposed to be representing you in the congress/senate. They are the ones that control this.

No need for any political war on this.  The rules for SS increases have been in law for years. They are based on Cost of Living figures and this is where the problem starts.  I have read and been told that the cost of living figure does NOT include the cost of food or fuel yet I see many citing the reduction in fuel prices as one reason we did not get more of an increase.  Along with practically nothing in interest on savings while the stock market thrives those living on fixed incomes  - not so much.  Interest rates of less than one percent are common.  For me, the Fed is killing the little guy by holding interest rates at slightly above zero.  I hold no stock or bonds and I think millions are in the same boat.  So, I take what I am given and am told to keep my mouth shut and be happy.

There are a few ways that can happen, but it typically involves a change of SS or Medicare status of some sort.  The Medicare & SS benefit calculations and complex that depend on several factors. For example, my wife pays a slightly higher Medicare B premium than I do because she is a 9 months younger and falls into a different age grouping. However, both of our increases netted out to zero change in the take-home amount. To understand what happened, you have to look at the line items in your benefit calculation and not just the bank deposit amount.

My monthly increase was $5.40 but I don't have part B yet. I'm still on my wifes group insurance, but that's about to change. I talked to her boss yesterday, and she told me she thought Donna should go on medical leave after her paid time off is used up. The difference is we won't have a check when the time runs out, but we just have to pay our part for the insurance per month, for up to 1 year.  If she goes on disability then we have to go on cobra and that cost is way up there.

Seiler.... In days of old when I used NETTAMER on Usenet and had a stock of about 1,000 tag lines It would pick from at random..... I wish I'd have had that one.. Very good... Love it... (Yes folks I know off topic)

Mandatory on topic part:

I'm not sure what is included these days in the Consumer Pirce Index but I may look it up "I was told" well.. I've been told many things that failed at the first blush when I researched... And I have also been told many things that passed research as well.

For example: I was once told of one George Washington, as a child, cutting down a cherry tree... Turns out, based on research, that would have been Impossible for him to do.   The Cherry is not native to North America and was not imported till after George boy was an adult.

More OT for clarity -- -

For example: I was once told of one George Washington, as a child, cutting down a cherry tree... Turns out, based on research, that would have been Impossible for him to do.   The Cherry is not native to North America and was not imported till after George boy was an adult.

Almost John.  The sweet and sour cherry most of us know are not native.  However, the black cherry (Prunus serotina) and the chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), are definitely native.  The chokecherry is the official state fruit of North Dakota.  Quite edible, with some manipulation. The species name of the chokecherry in relation to the GW story could be a head-scratcher.
