No double space anymore! (after a period)
« on: February 20, 2017, 06:30:57 PM »
I'm a year shy of being 40 years old, and just recently learned (through my wife's official researching on writing/blogging) that it's no longer considered proper to put a double-space after a period. So I'm trying it in this post.  Oops I just double spaced right before "Oops" by habit.

I've been typing this way since learning decades ago, but I guess the practice goes back to manual typesetting in the 1920's or so. Slightly larger spaces were placed after each sentence for readability, and the double-space rule was adopted with typing machines to keep that trend. But now it has been abandoned in official writing circles. Don't these sentences look too close together? ??? :P

(When I wrote my thesis and finished my Master's Degree last year, none of my professors said a peep about spaces between sentences. So maybe it's not all that universal yet. Anyone else over 40 having a problem with this? ;))

4 years in grammar school in the UK, and we were not taught to double space. However, I learned when we came to the US that schools here teach different grammar, spelling and punctuation  :( Actually, I worked for a US company in the UK for 10 years, and we used to kid each other in our daily correspondence about differences in spelling and grammar.

I'm the newsletter editor for several clubs, and always edit out double spaces  ;D

Colleges I attended had "form style manuals" or some such, which defined how they wanted things written, although I don't recall what they said about spaces. Did your post graduate college have such a document?

I learned this new rule at least 15, maybe more, years ago. Been doing it ever since.

I was always taught to double space after a paragraph but not after a period. I just finished my masters last year and I only double spaced after a paragraph.

I don't think it's improper as much as it's unnecessary with word processing. I dropped the habit when typewriter ribbons went the way of the dodo bird.

How would you notice? The new paragraph begins on a new line.

You could add five spaces and not see it, like I just did!

What I should have said is I was taught to double space after a paragraph but not after every sentence that ends in a period as seems to be what was implied in the original post. In the military we often double spaced between each line on drafts so it could be marked up before the final. In grade school we were taught to indent the beginning of each paragraph when writing by hand. Gee, I can still remember.

I learned to type in the 5th grade.  I've heard this, but cannot break myself from double spacing.  It is so ingrained in me.  I do it without thinking.  Much like the to "dashes" on the F and the J key.  I learned to use those keys to find the home row while in tech school in the Air Force and now it is part of me.  I cannot type anymore without those raised dashes on the keys.  It throws off my thinking to the point that I cannot use that keyboard.  I for one, will continue to double space.  Please feel free to edit them out Tom.  I'll keep putting them in though.

LOL Ed.

Chris, my better half, learned to type while entering DVLA (aka UK DMV) drivers license info. They had 'blank' keyboards with no info on them.

Some trivia ... Chris entered the first drivers license info for Prince Charles.

I've heard/read of the trend to single space after periods, but it seems easier understand context and paragraph structure with less conscious thought when double spaces are used.  I guess I'm getting too old to change that particular preference.

Who made this rule?

I don't care what anyone thinks.
If you were taught to use one space after a period - fine, I won't fault you for it.

But I was taught to double space after a period so please don't fault me for it.

I never did learn to type, one finger hunt and peck while looking at the keyboard. I never thought about double spacing. As Bob says this forum is generally pretty good with punctuation and grammar, others I go on often leave a lot to be desired.

I've never heard of it or contemplated it and honestly 40 isn't that old but it does explain the spacing in really old textbooks from the 40s and 50s. I just thought processors back then were a little hard to keep uniform.

Maybe something to do with where you grew up also.  You can set MS word to do that sort of spacing automatically so I'd be willing to bet your professors just thought you liked that classic, scholarly look  :D

Colleges I attended had "form manuals" or some such, which defined how they wanted things written, although I don't recall what they said about spaces. Did your post graduate college have such a document?

Indeed, but different courses/professors had different preferences for which format should be used. At different points of my post-grad "career" I used up to 4 different formatting methods... ASA, APA, MLS, and CMS. I have no idea what any of them say about spacing!

With all the bad grammar, bad spelling and bad punctuation I see on the Internet I think the number of spaces after a period is very low on my list of complaints.

Yeah I realize the standards are low (which is fine!) on the internet. Just a weird (to me) update that I recently learned about for more "official" correspondence, and I'm having a hard time breaking myself of the period-space-space habit.

In my previous career I was taught "Completed Staff Work".  That included the double space after the period.  I do it without thinking about it.  It's just automatic now.

I  think  double  spacing  came  up  when  you  had  to  write  a  two  page  report  and  had  nothing  to  say.   Just  think  you  can  fill  up  two pages  with  spaces  and  not  just  after  a  period  .

Another  change  is  coming  .  They  are  not  teaching  cursive  handwriting  now  .

Ooh good question and I think I still do it on a keyboard - will check later - was taught this as a typist. However I don't do it on my tablet or phone. Probably because they automatically put spaces in, even though it's only 1.

I'm a double space kind of guy and don't see any changes for me in the near or distant future.  That is how I was taught in 1970-1971 in typing class.  I took three semesters of typing and my reason for taking three instead of one (one was required), is that most of the class in the second and third semester was............Female!  It was just me and my buddy Stan, surrounded by 33 high school girls.   ;D

Another thing that I see frequently is the lack of a comma when needed.  Example:  Yesterday we went to town and shopped, had dinner, and saw a movie.  Lots of folks would leave out the comma after the word "dinner".  I was taught that when you structure a sentence using multiple nouns, like the above example, a comma is required after each and every one.

Don't get me started on the cursive subject!

I was taught to double space following the end of a sentence.  At one time I had a word processor that either auto-double spaced or reacted to a double space differently than a single space. forget which been around 30+ years.

Sometimes I even double space.

Apparently my childhood was deprived, since nobody taught me about spacing between sentences except that there was some. Maybe because I never had a typing class? We wrote in cursive or printed, so the notion of "single" or "double" did not apply.

I mostly double-space when using a keyboard, simply because it improves readability in longer paragraphs. Never really thought about having a rule about it, though.

3 semesters of typing in high school and I was taught to double space.  I don't see the need to change, because I think it's easier to read.  In fact, I notice that if I double space while texting, my phone puts the period in front of the double space automatically.

I think it may be another consequence of Twitter, where character count, counts.

Haha on both of those. And yeah I've been single spacing on text messages for a few years because I have a Tracfone (no unlimited texts) and try to keep messages on one page. That's a dying tactic too, with most people I know sending 5 rapid fire texts with a few words each to say 5 things... instead of taking a few seconds to think and put it all in one message. ???

I was taught to double space, and do so except when it is at the end of a line.  With wrap around text, the second space causes the first word on the next line to start one space too far in.  So, that may be why they now say one space only after the period.
GWCOWGILL, are you referring to a double line space at the end of a paragraph?  Otherwise, I join the ranks of the confused as well.

While I concur with the OP, It seems change is hard thing to accept for most. Interesting.
Change sucks sometimes. Those of us at, or getting close to, retirement age remember the old days. Emphasis on the word "old".
I don't care for it either. But none of us can stop it.

Ah the Oxford comma. Still a MUCH debated topic. I personally am in favor but others are not. I have a friend who works PR for a big national chain store and they conduct entire meetings based on their view of their PR staff using the Oxford comma. Serious stuff.

This subject seems to be more controversial than toilet paper.

Wait... what part of toilet paper is controversial?

You must be new here Annie. Do a forum search on toilet paper and spend a few days reading all about it. Single ply vs double ply, RV paper vs conventional paper, flush it or put it in the waste paper basket, and much more.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Easy. You have a choice of using it, or not. Your call. Same as using proper grammar.

I have no halo upon my head when using proper grammar. I do my best. Please forgive me if I screw up.
But in today's world of emails and texting, "short type" is becoming a norm.
I'm starting to think we all should all get accustom to it.

Ed
Indeed a double line space at the end of a paragraph when typing and an indented beginning of a paragraph when writing cursive, I learned in grade school by one of the meanest teachers in the business who always carried a ruler to hit you across the back of the hand when you didn't follow her rules. :(

That brings back memories! I also recall the day a super-sized rugby player, who was our math teacher in grammar school, punched me in the stomach. I didn't misbehave in his class again  :(

That same teacher hit me with that ruler across the back of the neck and I cold cocked her to get expelled for a day. (My father got involved)

I was whacked between the knuckles with a metal edged ruler for writing with my left hand. Still got the scar to prove it.
My dad went up to the school to have a little chat with my first grade teacher, who was an old coot.
He never did tell me what was said, but she let me write with my left hand from then on......

Talk about being disciplined in school...I had a forth grade teacher who had, at least, four inch nails that curled upward.  Whenever I, or someone else in class, did something wrong (grammar or otherwise) she would come up from behind and squeeze our shoulders with her tongs...I mean nails.  It never really hurt, but it sure did gross me out.  I soon became the most well behaved kid in our class!

It is obvious that none of the posters went to a Catholic school run by nuns.  Their weapon of choice was a yard long hardwood pointer, and their aim was impeccable.  We quickly learned to behave, or we had red welts on our back or neck.
GW, that is what I thought you were referencing, the OP was/is talking about ending a sentence with a period, followed by two spaces, versus only one space, but either being mid paragraph, and that is why we were confused, since you don't see the spaces after the period at the end of a paragraph.

No run-ins with a nun. Our gymnastics teacher had two weapons:
  • The top plank of a hurdle applied with some force across the butt.
  • A (heavy) medicine ball hurled at you when you were part way through climbing a rope.

Ooh good question and I think I still do it on a keyboard - will check later - was taught this as a typist. However I don't do it on my tablet or phone. Probably because they automatically put spaces in, even though it's only 1.

Actually, most apps with keyboard input will put a period at the end of a sentence if you doublespace.  The one that didn't for me (and I don't remember what it is), just drove me crazy.  Probably why I don't remember it...don't use it anymore!

The thing about writing rules is that you only need to know them so you can break them effectively.

All the authors that even the teachers put forward as "The Greats" broke the rules.

I use (abuse?) punctuation and style to try to convey how I talk in my writing. Even to the point of intentional misspellings.  ::)

I will double space until the day I die.  And, when reading comments written by others, I add that extra space mentally if it is missing.  And I also mentally transpose everything to cursive.
