We need to take a fifth wheel from Toronto to Edmonton in a week or so.  We will be welcoming a new baby bear so no it can not wait.
Across the top of Lake Superior seems too risky.  What is the best route across the top of the USA?  I80?  I90? I94?
We also have no experience with toll roads.  In Canada the roads are usually free.  How much of the route is toll roads? And what are the costs for a truck and 27 foot fifth wheel?

There are a few different routes you can do.
I would assume that I94 would be the best route.
Tolls are usually $2-$5 per toll and most would be around the Chicago area.
No tolls in MI. except if you did go North in MI you have to pay to cross the bridge then take Hwy 2 west.

It is a crap shoot this time of year which ever route you decide to take.  However, having spent several years travelling through Northern Ontario, I think I would be a bit more comfortable taking the TCH all the way there.  Since it is the major East West road in Canada, I believe it would get better attention if you do run into a storm, and the chances of a storm along any of the 3 routes really are the same, and I'd think there is greater risk along MI's Upper Peninsula of having lake effect snow without a storm.
But, if you can leave your options open until the last minute, check the weather and road conditions, then make your choice.
