My suburban has a towing capacity of 7200 lbs. can I safely tow a trailer with unloaded weight of 5500 lbs. Thanks for any input

You probably can if you don't load that trailer to more than about 6700 lbs, leaving 500 lbs for passengers, gear & the trailer hitch.

A better measure is the trailer GVWR (max loaded weight). Most trailers end up being loaded to near max after a few trips, so it's best to assume that will be your loaded weight. If you can pull the max safely, you are probably good to go. So look for a trailer with a GVWR well under 7200 lbs, preferably 6500-6700.

Remember every pound in the 'Burb above a 150# driver must be deducted from this towing capacity.  This includes all passengers and pets.

Look for reserve capacity on sticker in glove box or drivers door. This weight is what yo can add in cargo after all passengers including hitch weight.
If that doesn't exceed TV GVWR and GCWR of both your legal and good. It may not be ideal though. 1500 Burbans are 7,000-7,200lb GVWR, GCWR around 13,000lbs trailer and tow vehicle combined
