Would you recommend 65N through Chicago?
Or 39N bypassing Chicago?
Both routes appear to be the same time and distance (according to google maps).
Thanks

I65 to I74 to I39 is a no brainer. Absolutely no reason to travel thru Chicago, Indy is bad enough. No slowdowns thru towns on I39, there are no towns of any size.

There will be a slow down at Rockford,Il., but not much. 39 is still in pretty good shape, just drove it a few weeks ago. There will also be some toll road N of Rockford, but can't remember how much, been 17 years since I've been snowmobiling in Northern Wis.

We've done that drive over a dozen times.  We live in oldham county and my sister lives in barrage (about 30 min north of madison)  We've never been through chicago going up.  I-65 usually is pretty crowded.  I-74 through Champaign and Bloomington is easy.  39 North is straight, flat and boring for about 3 hours.  Check your gas stops.  There are not many options from bloomington to rockford.  Never done that drive with my camper, but was about 8hrs in my SUV.
