Ford F-150 2.7 or 3.5 Ecoboost to tow these campers?
« on: April 07, 2017, 02:42:11 PM »
Hello - I'm new to the forum and have a huge learning curve as I look to get my first travel trailer.  I want to be sure I do this correctly so taking my time and doing as much research as I can.  I'm looking at getting a 2017 Ford F-150 truck but am uncertain as to whether to get the 2.7 or 3.5 Ecoboost.  The truck would be a 4x4 SuperCrew.  Also wondering what kind of tow package I would need.  Here are the campers I'm interested in.  Looks like out of the choices the highest GVWR would be 4,000 pounds.  Regarding weight in the truck, I foresee mostly just 2 adults but could be up to 4 adults. Thanks for any input you might be able to provide.

Here is what I'm thinking about:

Those are fairly small campers, you shouldnt have any problems towing with the ford. My brother towed his 25 ft with his ecoboost. I think he had the bigger motor. He got quite a bit better mileage than a few other makes with basically the same size trailer. As far as the hitch, you should get a hitch rated for what ever the truck is rated to pull. You might want to tow something else in the future. You dont want to limit yourself. The tow package should include a tranny cooler Im sure.

Either engine will work fine for those trailers-- neither one will much notice a 4000lb trailer.  (engines aren't the limiting factor in towing with modern pickups).

Get a truck with the towing package which includes a brake controller and a hitch rated for way more than any of those trailers will weigh.

Enjoy!

THANK YOU!!

Welcome to the Forum!.

As others have said, you should be fine, but you definitely want the max tow package and an integrated brake controller.

The basic formula for these simple setups is the PAYLOAD stated on the driver door latch pillar yellow label (NOT on the web site or advertising!!) must be greater than    10% of TT  GVWR (hitch wt) + 80# for WD hitch + weight of all passengers and cargo in the truck.

This holds for all TT, but no need to look at rear axle capacity or GCWR in this case.

If you read lots of threads on this board as well as Newcomer and General boards, plus related Library articles, you will quickly get a good education.  Ask any question that you have.

It's not a dumb question if you do not know the answer.

Engine size is not your only choice  :(  Its not the FIRST trailer you get that dictates Tow Vehicle but the 2nd or perhaps 3rd. I learned the hard way ($$$$) that the F150 is excellent if you limit your future to 5000 or less gross trailer weight. Above that and you really have to get familiar with PAYLOAD, weight distribution and more...   YES, there are many folks that tow 9000 lb trailers with an F150 and report "no problem", but those folks certainly are very familiar with above concerns and many have spent big bucks to simulate an F250 suspension.

You should be fine with that setup. I have a 2016 F-150 with the 2.7 Ecoboost and I am pulling a 27' Keystone Passport. My trailer has a dry weight of 4200 lbs and my truck pulls it like a champ. I get pretty good mpg too (about 10mpg). Love the Ecoboost engine. A lot of punch out of a v6. Good choice on your truck.
I just wanna go camping.
