I have a 2002 Onan 5500 generator, carbureted. It is very clean with few hours. I believe I may have run it out of fuel. I have refueled and primed the carburetor. Now it tries to start but dies immediately after pressing the start button. I have checked the fuel pump and carburetor. The fuel pump works well, filters not plugged. Carburetor bowl is full of fuel. I have pulled the spark plug and check for spark. I get a great spark while pushing the start button. As soon as I take my finger off the start button I lose spark. I have disconnected the oil pressure sensing switch with no change in symptoms. There is a single wire that comes out of the small wire harness located under the carburetor. That wire is connected to a single wire that leads around the right side and to the back of the generator somewhere. When I disconnect that wire the motor runs for two or three seconds Longer before dying. Can anyone tell me where this wire leads to? Any suggestions for the fix?
