We are planning a stop in Canyon De Chelly on our way to Moab.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a campground?  Or can you give us details on a campground there.

Betty

There is only one campground anywhere near Canyon de Chelly, that's the Cottonwood campground right at the park.  There are limited spaces for RVs over 34 feet, and lots of trees.  It's boondocking and free.  We'll be there about 4/22.

Chinle is pretty isolated. There's the campground in the park, free, no hookups, lots of stray dogs wandering around. There's also a campground 10 miles east on the south rim road http://www.spiderrockcampground.com/index.htm

Is there a mini-rally happening at Canyon de Chelley??

Yep, there may be as many as 6 or more forum RVs there the week before Moab.  We may have a parking problem as we're all 38' or more.  What's the Spider Rock CG like for big rigs?  It may be an alternative if there isn't enough room for all of us.

Even though Canyon de Chelly is a National Park, it is run solely by the Navajos.  That tidbit will help explain a lot of things like a lot of loose dogs.

I found the reviews after I posted earlier and it sounds like Spider Rock is even less suited for big rigs than Cottonwood.  Also, if it rains, it turns to mud.  I think we'll take our chances at Cottonwood.

You are certainly welcome to join us.  We will probably arrive on the 22nd.

We have camped at Cottonwood in Canyon De Chelly and it's fine.  Didn't see much of any dogs, and the sites will hold 38 foot coaches.  We thought it was actually quite nice and stayed several days before heading on to Moab a couple of years ago.  There are even a couple of "pull through" sites.

If there is lots of water in the canyon bottom, take the time to do a 6 wheel open air bus tour.  They have full day or half day tours.  When we were there the canyon water was high and it was a blast.

For those who like to hike, we signed up for a "White Horse" canyon hike with a Navajo.  It was about 4-5 miles round trip starting at White House trail and ending up back on the ridge.  It was very informative; but that may depend on your guide.
