101 THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA
IS CLOSED FROM THE JCT OF SR 1 /IN LEGGET/ TO 15 MI SOUTH OF GARBERVILLE (MENDOCINO CO) - DUE TO A ROCK SLIDE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

The all caps is from the CA roads web site.  Looks like it will closed until mid week.  Dick

Looks like this winter's storms have hit the Emerald Triangle area about bad as Big Sur and it's pretty much closed down.  There isn't really any way around this massive slde:

"Caltrans was advising travelers heading north to Humboldt County and beyond to use Highway 5.

The CHP also warned motorists not to trust GPS in their efforts to find a way around the slide. Travelers were being routed by their GPS to take Usal Rd. around the closure. But the road is really a 4?4 trail and numerous motorists have become stuck."

Detours are going east to I-5 using Hwy 20 to the south, or Hwy 299 to the north.  299 has it's own problems with a slide partially blocking it with one way traffic control.  Hwy 36 is a very narrow, twisting road with length restrictions posted at both ends in good weather.  I wouldn't even attempt it now with who knows what coming at you around the next blind curve.

Highway 1 was also blocked by a slide near Leggett and has just recently reopened, though the slide is still active:

Just coming back from that area the only other route is I5 to Grants Pass Oregon then 199 to 101. Do not take 34 out of Red Bluff.

I think it is 36 not 34.  36 is not a good hwy for RVs.  Dick
