It all started out with me wanting to mount a big diamond plate chest on the back of my 29' class C motorhome. I wanted to mount it on the chassis frame extensions that hold the sewer bumper and hitch and I wanted to put a battery bank and air compressor in it. It took a while to find a shop (in this case a blacksmith/spring shop) who had a clue as to what I wanted and it turns out this guy really appears to know his business and motorhomes. When I mentioned what I have (class C Ford chassis) he said every Ford chassis he's seen on a rig like mine has lengthened the F350 chassis by simply butt welding C channel to the factory frame. It's "reinforced" with a silly little 6"x8"x1/4" plate with some 3/8" bolts. I checked and that's exactly what I have. He claims Ford does not recommend doing this and says even though I have a class III hitch I'd be pushing it by having more than about 300 lbs tongue weight. Can anybody verify this??? ??? Thanks!
