Hello, I have a surburban 6 gal propane water heater that will ignite and run for 3 to 5 minutes and shut off. I noticed that the reset was tripped so I reset it and tried it again with the same result. Any ideas on troubleshooting.

Check for nests in the burner tube.  Be sure its full of water.

Repeatedly tripping the limit switch (reset is required) suggests an overheating condition, which could be a lack of water in the tank. However, the hi-limit switch may have failed or come loose from its seat, so check that as well.

Is this an SW6 model heater, or an older RV series model?  You can view & download a Suburban heater service manual at http://bryantrv.com/docs.html#water_heater.

Two things that can trip the high limit switch.
1: Bad thermostat (Primary) this causes it to not shut off and trips the high (Safety) Thermostat.

2: Bad Thermostat (high limit) since this is a switch, and it passes electrical current, if the contacts get a bit.. er.. tarnished.. resistance happens. and heat is generated.. Tripping it.

And depending on the Water heater.... The control board.. If it goes bad all bets are off as to what the problem is.

See "Troubleshooting LP Mode" on page 11 of this pdf.

BTW I suspect your water heater "spark/sense electrode" needs cleaning, (or is failing and needs to be replaced).
