The front roof top AC unit on my 2006 Monaco works intermittently....the fan runs but the compressor doesn't always start.  We just returned from a weekend trip to the Florida Keys with no front AC.  I intended to try and trouble shoot it today, but of course it works fine now.  Can a start capacitor fail hit and miss?  I was under the impression that they were either good or bad. When the compressor runs it cools just fine.  Any ideas?

When the start capacitor fails or deteriorates, the compressor is harder to start. It may still manage to start occasionally, or in cooler whether when the starting load is a bit less.

First thing to do is a visual inspection of the capacitor & associated "run" device. Swollen can, crud at the top, corroded connections are all bad signs. With a 2006 coach, I would go ahead and buy at least one new capacitor and swap it out, keeping the old one as a spare if it has no obvious signs of failure. You can get them on Amazon or Ebay for a modest price.
