Backup if I can't get in to North Campground in Bryce
« on: June 02, 2017, 08:45:14 PM »
Arriving Bryce Canyon the morning of the 5th (this Monday) and trying for North Campground (first come, first serve). I've heard it shouldn't be a problem but looking for recommendations for a backup in case it doesn't work out.

Ruby's Inn is ok. It is right on the tram route so it is handy. There is also a tremendous FS campground about 15-20 miles northwest of Bryce called King's Creek. It has a few big sites and is really lovely though quite primitive. We stayed there on our second trip to Bryce, and we would stay there again if possible.

Perfect thanks. We're alternating dry and FHU camping on this trip so that would work well. Are you saying you'd choose King's instead of North? Also, our bandwidth at the moment is thin so having trouble loading maps - what route did you take to King's and how was the road?

No, I would take the site inside the park before anything else. We like silly things like ranger talks and the ease of access. But it is hard to get into the park campground in the tourist season. King's Creek is north west of the park off highway 12. Here is the info from AllStays:
7 mi from SR 12 on East Fork Road No.087. Turn on road No.572 at sign for King Creek Campground. Follow this road around Tropic Reservoir. The campground is on the west side., GPS: 37.60900, -112.25700

When we were there 3 years ago, it had lots of trees. There is an artesian well on one of the roads around the little lake with great water. Lots of people were stopping by and filled jugs for their home use. We used some and didn't die; it was good.  ::)

Ruby's Inn is just outside the entrance to Bryce Canyon so it's very convenient.  That's where the "town" is located with fuel, restaurant, grocery store, horseback rides, etc.  The campground has full-hookups if wanted.  The park itself also has a lodge (good restaurant the last time we visited) and grocery store.
