Gros Ventre to West Yellowstone - Hiway 191 or 22/33/20?
« on: June 10, 2017, 10:06:10 PM »
Next week we'll be traveling Gros Ventre to West Yellowstone. My preference is to go through the park on 191 so we can see some of the park while getting to our destination. 38' motorhome with toad, any issues? I'm not shy about narrow roads (e.g., Hiway 1 north of San Simeon or Jalama Beach Road) and/or some grades but if it's truly not advisable I'd like to know. Thx

Rivers are WAY up, couple of closed roads (including main road to Gros Ventre, had to come in back way). No animals at Oxbox. None!  :(  Otherwise fine. Clouds supposed to break tomorrow. We're in a dry camp site in C loop facing the river 100 feet away  :))

We didn't see any there last year either. Saw Moose a good few times at Blacktail Ponds Overlook. We hung around for over half an hour and saw 5 plus deer. Great place!

You'll have no issues with 191. We've done it several times with our 43 MH towing a jeep.
Have fun. We like Gros Ventre and all of the Grand Tetons.

Take 191 etc! Do not take the Wilson, WY to Victor, ID! The road over Teton Pass is 10% up and down for about 5 miles both directions. We see it many times with RVs with smoking brakes blown out transmissions!

Wellll.... we did take 191 and are currently in West Yellowstone, nice easy drive and pretty. Aaaand.... we arrived Jackson via Teton Pass  :)  And yup you're right, it's steep, but I've done steeper. Just took it easy, mostly second gear and exhaust brake, used first gear at times. Very little braking and transmission temp never got above normal

We're kinda winging it. Many of these national park visits are probably going to be "previews" more than thorough visits. We have two rescue dogs with us and the parks are decidedly not pet friendly. And while the dogs are sweet, they have separation anxiety so we can't leave them for more than 2-3 hours. Plus, we have hit a cold week, nice last week, near 70 next week, but 40s with rain/snow some of the time we're here. So at the moment we're planning on driving pieces of "the figure 8" with the dogs, seeing what we can see, and individually running out on some boardwalks.

Do you have suggestions?

Get up early and drive to Hayden Valley we saw the wolves there around 6:30am. It was worth the very early start. You can take dogs as you wouldn't be out of car long and we saw them from the car park,.

Drive the loop round firehole lake,. Couple of stops to look at coloured hot springs and you will see  great fountain geyser if you are lucky and definitely white Dome geyser going off, it's pretty regular.  We went a few times and eventually saw great Fountain but had missed the peak.

Go to the old faithful Inn and look around. You could do the boardwalk there in a few hours if you are fit., make sure you see morning glory and try to catch some of the geysers,  times in visitor centre. Watch old faithful going off from the boardwalk, you see it without hundreds of people beside you. Hopefully you could maybe leave dogs in car if they are OK as it would be cool enough, go early to get a space in car park.  It's about an hours drive though so you may be not want o leave pooches.   I think someone will watch or check ip on the dogs for a small fee if you are at Grizzly RV if you ask in reception, if that helps get you out for a bit longer.

Just drive round the main sections if you can keeping an eye out for bears. They tend to be in the fields or sometimes in the forest near the road. It's amazing how many you can see when you get your eye in.

The imax in West Yellowstone is good for a movie.

Also the Beartooth Highway us a nice drive in truck/car but may be snowbound at top.

Mammoth is nice too, few boardwalks there.
