looking for the best route from Lumberton, NC to Gettysburg, I know I will have to used I95, I would prefer to bypass the Washington traffic

We take 95 to 17 to15 with 36 ft mh and towdmostly a nice ride

What Robert said!  We have made frequent trips from York to Richmond and always use 17.  US15 will then take you right to Gettysburg.

Do not take I-95 go  over to  81.
When you get Gettysburg make sure you get the auto tour CD play it in your vehicle and really enjoy .it is awesome.

You can head up to Rockingham, and take US-220/I-74 to Greensboro, and from there, US 29 through Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Culpepper, VA, then take US-15 all the way to Gettysburg. It's a decent drive, if you don't want to get there in a hurry.
Or you can take I-74 to I-81 to Chambersburg, PA, and US-30 East to Gettysburg.

I tend to prefer the scenic route, myself.
And, when in Lynchburg, it's a quick side trip to Appomattox to see where Lee Surrendered.

While in Gettysburg go downtown and get some peanut butter ripple ice cream at the Sunset Ice Cream Store.  If I was a millionaire I'd fly there once a month for it.
