Could the noise being made on the front of this engine be made by the badly worn Serpentine belt, or from the tension pulley?

The belt isnt likely to make noise, but the reason that the belt is badly worn is what is probably causing the noise.  Bad bearing would be my guess.

I'm afraid you may be right, but I have not been able to detect any bearing noise from the pulleys that I have been able to spin with the belt loose.

Also, check the bearings on the AC compressor, power steering, water pump, and alternator.  I had a belt shred on my 8.1 and even thought there was no noise, the problem was the damper pulley on the crankshaft had separated, and was coming apart.

The pulley idler goes bad a lot on these engines. I'm on my third after 80,000 miles.

Have you ever replaced the belt?  If not....hop to it.

Also exhaust manifolds can sometimes sound like a slipping belt when you first start the engine...trust me. Been through some manifold problems.

Have you replaced your transmission fluid?
