We live in Taos which is two hours north of SF so we've never used the RV to go there but have noticed some RV parks in and around SF. There's a really long list of things to do in the area. If you want to ask more questions as a way to tailor the response, go ahead. Museums, galleries, history, golf, hiking, bicycling, shopping, eating out, scenery, mountains, river rafting, Indian Pueblos, art tours, fiestas, Indian Market, gambling, casinos, motorcycling, politics, environmental studies, Los Alamos, National Parks/Monuments, classes galore ... I suggest whatever you decide, get some reservations... SF gets really busy that time of the year.

Full hookup and easy to Santa Fe. We visited all the campgrounds in the area and felt Rancheros was better are at least as good. It is not a parking lot but actually has some character. There are long terms but they appeared to be parked in separate area.
If you get a chance try Horseman's Haven Cafe 4354 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507. They still serve old Santa Fe style hatch chili Mexican food (HOT).
In Santa Fe, the downtown square in interesting. For history buffs, exp. WWII there is Pecos National Historical Park.
Los Alamos for the nerdie including the Bradbury Science Museum. Los Alamos is now a real town and they did a poor job preserving the historical sites.

Hard to say since it depends on your interests/preferences. SF is much larger, more services and can serve as a base for visits to many other places. Taos is more rural and "low-key" although offering many of the same options as SF. If, for instance, you really like hiking, I'd probably opt for Taos. SF offers a wider spectrum of art/cultural venues.

Note that the primary route between SF/Taos, State Highway 68, will be under construction starting Aug 1 and running for 3 months. They are laying a new Nat/Gas pipeline under the existing highway. You can expect big delays, depending on traffic, in the canyon. There are alternate routes though.
If you come to Taos, try Orlando's for a great place to eat... I enjoy the "green chile chicken enchiladas" or if you like sushi try: Sushi A La Hattori a little north of Orlando's, great for lunch... then go for a hike... If you time it down to the day, Sept 23 in Taos will be an event of note: https://paseoproject.org/ and at the same time, the Fall Arts event.

What I would like to find a nice upscale campground or RV Resort within say 30 to 40 min of Santa Fe. I really like ferfer's suggestion Rancheros De Santa Fe. Pendaries RV Resort looks interesting but my be too far out. Wish there was something nice between Santa Fe and Taos.
