Best 5th Wheel under $30000.00
« on: August 05, 2017, 01:21:36 PM »
Looking for a 5th wheel. I have about $30000.00 to spend. Not for full time use but to travel the south with for 3 or 4 months a year. I really know nothing about them but I had one about 20 years ago so I am not totally without knowledge. I have looked at a few new ones in my price range and they all look OK. I am not sure how to tell a good one from a bad one or even if I would be getting a good deal or not. Anyone with any advice on which brand or any help at all. I have seen the Starcraft Solstice 27RLS and like the floor plan of it but is it any good? Or should I look elsewhere? My tow vehicle is a 2013 Dodge Ram 2500 with the hemi and a short box. I live in central Michigan. Any good dealers around my area?

Buy a gently used one. Save money and the first owner likely fixed most of the factory new glitches.

Step 1
Take a picture of the two stickers at the drivers door. One, with yellow on it, is on the B pillar. You need to know all the numbers on it. It tells you how much YOUR truck can carry. The other sticker should tell you things like the towing capacity and CGVW (the weight of the truck plus trailer).

A 5th wheel is gonna put about 20% of it's GVWR (empty weight plus load capacity) on the rear axel of the truck. So, you take the load capacity of the truck (from the sticker) and subtract your passengers and any other stuff you carry plus a couple of hundred pounds for a hitch and what is left is the capacity left for the trailer pin weight.

From all that you can figure out how heavy a trailer you can tow. A trailer has a sticker with empty weight and carrying capacity (ccc). Add em up for the gross weight (GVWR) of the trailer.  Multiply by .2 to get the pin weight.

Be conservative.

Mostly, you get what you pay for.  Look more at the floorplan than the manufacturer.  How livable does it seem for YOU?  First thing is to figure out what you can safely tow with YOUR truck.  With the short box,you may need to get a slider hitch in case of tight turns.

You can get more for your money if you look at rigs a few years older.  New from the factory "bugs" will have been worked out, too.

My tow vehicle is a Dodge Ram 2500 V8 Short Box.

Tow Vehicle Specs:
GVWR 8800
PAYLOAD 2400

5th Wheel Spec:
GVWR 8900

Passengers, hitch, equipment -700 lbs = 8100
PIN WEIGHT 1780

So my tow vehicle should tow this 5th wheel and be within spec? This seems to be really confusing. What would be the max 5th wheel GVWR I could tow safely?

You might want to start a new thread regarding the towing capacity.  We have several members who are pros at figuring that out.

First, the GVWR seems very low.  Most 2500 are 9900 or 10,000 GVWR

Is the Payload from the yellow placard or some generic table?
Is the pin wt from the literature or is the FW  GVWR under 9,000#?
You MUST use yellow placard and GVWR for accurate results!

Based on your information of 700# of passengers, hitch and cargo carried in the truck and 1780 pin wt = 2480# minimum payload.

Technically, this is 80# over, but scales are not generally accurate enough to call this significant and the truck should be able to handle this if proper numbers were used.

The GVWR is from the sticker on the door of my truck. The sticker didn't give me the payload but it did give me the GAWR for the front of 5200 lbs and the GAWR for the rear of 6200lbs. My tow vehicle is a 4x4 if that make a difference. The payload I took off a generic table. The pin weight I figured 20% of the trailer GVWR. The trailer GVWR was taken from the yellow sticker on the trailer.

Cougar High Country's are a lighter weight, without being a ultra lite, 5th wheel. We have a 315 RES that seems to be well built and weights less than 9000 lbs.We got our 2013 this spring and paid less than $30,000 but set aside some money for repairs and upgrades.

$30k should get you a pretty nice 5th wheel. It won't get you a real big one, but shouldn't be hard to find something under 30'. My Heartland is 26.5', and paid $26k for it brand new. It's a great RV, and has many high end features usually only found in high dollar rigs. Jayco also makes some quality, smaller 5th wheels, but they tend to be quite a bit higher priced. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the higher the price, the better the RV. It's simply not true. Do your home work, shop around, and never pay full sticker price!

Once you figure out your tow capacity, go look at USED ones.

Find one you fall in love with that suits your day to day lifestyle.

When I walked inside my RV, I felt right at home. I could see myself at the table, in the kitchen, in the bed. It all looked very doable, comfortable and cozy. I felt like 6 months later I would still be in love with it.

I bought it used.

And 7 years later, I am still in it 24/7.  ;D

I had thought that by buying used, I could switch around if it wasn't my cup of tea. But I haven't felt the urge to change. I have updated, repaired and added lots of goodies to make my life efficient.

I think your pushing it with your truck IF the 2,400 lb. payload is correct. I would want to know the exact figure on the payload. The GVWR on your truck looks good because it's a gas motor. 2500 diesels are normally 10,000 pounds GVWR.
As far as air bags are concerned, they might help the ride and level the truck to the trailer, but don't think they will allow you more payload.
If your going to use your existing truck to pull the 5th wheel, you are looking at a 27-28 footer. However, I have a 2014 2500 GMC diesel with a 2,680 payload and I pull a Fox Mountain 23.5RL. My trailers GVWR is 11,500. The trailers payload is 4,000 pounds. I use, at the most, 1/2 of the payload. So, at 9,500 pounds with 20% pin weight, I have roughly 1,900 pounds plus 200 for the hitch. BTW, Anderson make a 5th wheel hitch that weighs about 55 pounds. Now we are at 2,100 without anything in the bed but the hitch and no passengers.
Hence, be careful because you are pushing the limits of the truck.
We traveled to Alaska and lived in our trailer for 2 1/2 months. No problem although I would have liked a slide in the bedroom and another 5' in the kitchen/living area, but it worked.
Good luck and safe travels.

There should be a sticker on the door and on the B pillar. The one with yellow on the B pillar will list the specs on your specific truck as it came off the line.

We have a 27 ft. TT and are wanting to get a 5th wheel in the spring.  I recently purchased a 2017 F350 SRW Power Stroke. The GVWR is 11,500. The payload is 3,435. After reading through this thread it looks like I should stay at 12,000 or under for a 5th wheel. Am I correct?

Not necessairly so.  In reality that Furd should be good for a fiver up to about 14K pounds.
