On line Smithsonian has this article about William H. H. Murray.  He isn't really the 'inventor' but he wrote about it.   You might appreciate it, understanding how nature can regenerate us.

The Minister Who Invented Camping in America

Aircraft pioneer & inventor Glenn Curtiss helped to invent RVing when he built a towable camper for his pal Henry Ford to pull with an early Ford. Ford, Curtiss and Thomas Edison liked to go fishing and hunting together and "camped" in the trailer. Others saw it and loved it, so Curtiss started up a sideline making Curtiss Aerocar trailers. If you ever get near Hammondport, NY, the Curtiss Museum there is a fascinating stop with this camp trailer as well as vintage airplanes, cars, motorcycles and boats

Some interesting 20's vintage campers:

I think camping in the Americas was invented by the Native Americans thousands of years ago.  ;D

The earliest known human to exist in North America was about 50,000 years ago. So I would posit they would have been the first campers in America.

My vote is for one of these guys

No, I don't think so...
It's kinda relative I think.... relative to your "normal"

I have often thought along these lines... what is camping?
I think it has more to do with getting away from your "normal" and simplifying.
There is a component of getting out into nature as well....
and there is a component about doing it for recreation I think too...
but I think it's more about simplifying than anything else.

I recently read a biography by a Navajo code talker.  When he grew up, they lived in a hogan, which as I understand from his description and photos in the book was basically a survival shelter made from logs.  A step or two down form what most of us think of as a log cabin.  No floor, just dirt with rugs....
They were sheep herders, so summers would be spent sleeping under the stars following the grazing herd.
Were they camping when they were in the Hogan?
Were they camping when they were working the herd?

My mom in fact was born in a log cabin in KY, and grew up in a basic house...water from a well or spring....and she remembers getting electricity and plumbing.
Dad grew up in a similar way.
Were they camping?  By my standards they certainly were....but to them....nah, they were just living a normal life.

Yeah, and they were "fulltimers" as well.
