Dometic versus Atwood
« on: August 15, 2017, 04:55:46 PM »
My 19 foot trailer has a Dometic a/c unit which seems to do a good job cooling the camper, but is extremely noisy. Some have told me that ANY rooftop a/c unit without duct work will be very noisy, but others have said the Atwood unit is a better solution. My dealer seemed puzzled when I asked about switching to an Atwood, which he said he could do for $500 total cost but added that he has had customers who wanted to change from the Atwood to a Dometic! I am hoping for some useful info on this forum. Thanks.

Interesting that they would say Atwood is better than Dometic.

I recall years ago reading a Consumer's Report rating of cars
They panned the Ford (Forget the model, Escort perhaps) but praised the Mercury Tracer.

THEY ARE THE SAME CAR with different paint jobs.

Dometic and Atwood are (And Kwikee and Wedgewood) all one company.

From reading various threads here, it seems to depend on the model within the brand as to whether one is noisier than another, not necessarily the brand name alone.

I don't think that is quite correct. Kwikee, anyway, is part of Lippert Components (LCI Industries), which in turn is owned by Drew Industries. Dometic is an entirely different corporation and manufacturer of the Dometic & Penguin brands of RV a/c units. Atwood Mobile is owned by Dometic, though.

I thought that Atwood was importing and selling an Australian brand of a/c unit, but haven't been able to verify that for sure. It may well be that one of Dometics other subsidiaries is making a/c units in Australia and Atwood Air Command is the selling brand in the USA.

Pretty much goes with the territory. Between the compressor in the roof unit and the rush of air in/out on the inside, it's gonna be noisy.  Ducting can reduce the air noise some if done properly, but even that is not a given.

I wouldn't spend the money on a swap without listening to an Atwood unit in another rig. I suspect you will find the dealer is right.
