That seems excessive to me. Something is wrong. It could be something simple like a leak or it could be something serious. If it were being burned you'd probably be laying down a smoke screen so my guess would be a leak or excessive blowby forcing it out.

Excessive, if it is actually using the oil. However, in my experience diesels will throw out any excess if the crankcase is overfilled and dip sticks are often not accurate. If it drops 3 qts and then hold steady, probably no worries.
