Irma's coming, I'm not sticking around to see how it comes out!
« on: September 05, 2017, 08:29:33 PM »
With Irma closing in on Florida and having just achieved a Cat 5 storm status, I will be leaving the Gulf. We have been on the Gulf shore for about the last 5 days, and had a 2 week stay planned at this location.  But with the recent developments with Irma's track, we are heading out on Friday.

We will head up to Stone Mountain, Ga and drop in to see the SIL for a few days.  Then if there is anything left, we are supposed to have a week stay after that in St Augustine on the Atlantic side. Who says this full time stuff is boring! :o

I think if you leave Friday, you may be in a monumental traffic jam.

We will  leave Homestead Thursday morning with several of our grandchildren with us. This really looks bad. Traffic coming out of the keys has everything clogged up down here now.

I hope not Bruce. We won't be on the Interstates, so hopefully we can miss most of it.

Just saw on the news not 2 minutes ago that Irma may change course and track up the east coast of FL. They are saying folks cannot evacuate since they don't know where will be out of the path.

The turnpike is completely clogged up just north of Homestead, it appears the whole Keys m,ay be evacuating. I am hoping I can get out of here tomorrow morning. If it looks too bad, I may ride it out in my home which withstood Andrew,s eye and Northeast eyewall. Have to wait and see.

That would be great news, it all depends on the front coming down and the timing.

When you live this far south, there are not many choices. We will head to Tennessee if it appears it will come straight up Florida. This is by far the strongest storm I have seen comparing very well with Andrew and could be stronger than Andrew. I rode out Andrew but never again.

Tennessee would seem a safer bet, but who knows.

Hopefully the front will give Irma a push to keep it from a direct impact on the Florida coast.

Way far out to make an accurate prediction. I plotted Andrew when it was only 80 miles away and missed by 30 miles as I had predicted it to go over Miami when in fact it turned south slightly and hit us dead center, I had 18 minutes of the eye at my home. It was the back side or northeast corner of the storm that wrecked havoc on us.

We've been up north and are headed home to SW Florida.  We were going to be home tomorrow.  Just made reservations to stay at a park in northern Florida until Monday.

We went through Hurricane Charley in 2004 which was a cat 4 and don't wish to do that again.

I'm up in the South Jacksonville Saint Aug area.  The local TV weather guy has been saying yesterday that he's leaning more along the lines of what I'm seeing when I look at the spaghetti models..... more of a run up off shore of the east coast of FL....similar to Hurricane Matthew last year.  That one was a cat three when it passed us and I understand that the really strong stuff was just something like 20-30 miles off shore....so that means it missed my house by only 40-50 miles....it was basically a non-event here.  We were gone but I understand the neighborhood only lost power for a short while.
A few miles can make a huge difference....but you never really now which way it'll lean till it does

Still my points are these:
I think it's smart to wait just a bit more to see how it develops if you are in the panhandle especially.  If I were in South FL or the Tampa area, I think I'd be heading North sooner
I don't understand the NHC track, since it seems to be clearly diverging from almost all of the computer models (and my local weather guy)

On another thought, before Harvey gas in Delaware was hovering around $2.10-$2.13 gal. Now it is about $2.70. I hope Irma dies not push it even higher. And I hope businesses in Florida paid attention to what happened when folks in Texas jacked up prices on gas and commodities.

We have family on both the east and west coast of Florida (Daytona and Tampa). Not worried though since they were born and raised there and know what to do.

Official government (Are you Prepared) Test question (By the way I passed)

Where is the best place to take shelter during a Hurricane?

A: Outdoors
B: indoors
C: underground
D: In a shelter outside the storm area

After I got done laughing because no matter the disaster I have always advised the best place to be is ELSEWHERE.. I answered (D of course).

When we started fulltiming in 1998 diesel was about $.90 gallon. We were traveling in a remote area in Texas and needed gas. Only one station in town so stopped and had to pay $1.50 gallon. I told the wife if gas got that high everywhere we would have to give up fulltiming.

Irma should not have any effect on gas prices in general beyond localized demand created issues. Harvey had a significant effect on supply because of the large scale refinery shutdowns, with the expected supply and demand increases. And then there's always those few stations that try to get away price gauging of course.

When I started fulltiming in 2008 at the height of the economic recession,  diesel was selling in CA for nearly $5.00 a gallon. Friends said we were crazy. I didn't think so.

There is plenty of gas in the system/there is no shortage because of the refinery's shut down in Texas. There is a shortage because people are buying gas that don't need to and the stations can't get re supplied fast enough.
What you see in the rest of the country is just price gouging.

So you're saying that losing 20-25% of the US refining capacity including the largest refinery in the country had no effect on supply? There was no need for the Energy Department to release a half-million barrels of crude oil to a refinery in Louisiana to help mitigate shortages?

I do not want to get into politics of Oil prices but I recall when the national average for a gallon of gas was 4.17 (Aug 2008) and in Ca it was over 5.00/gallon.

I fear we are headed in that direction.. Seems every time (back then) the price dropped a bit there was a refinery fire or breakdown or a storm closed a port and the oil companies citing "Oh we can't get Saudi Oil" (Which by the way we no longer need to meet demand) so up went the price.

At the peak we got like 2% of our oil from the Saudi's. we have reduced oil consumption nearly 25% since then which is why I say we no longer need it..

Can you say PRICE GOUGING.

But it could be worse... Waffle House I used to visit every week used to have signs proudly proclaming you could buy a 16.9 OZ bottle of water for $1.69.. Folks that is 12.80/gallon.

Poor example, John... Like most bottled/canned beverages, the cost of the contents is negligible. What you're paying for mostly is the container, the marketing, the bottler/distributor/dealer markups, and the warehousing and transportation costs. On the other hand, motor vehicle fuel is bulk delivered to a reusable bulk container where it's vended from a fixed dispenser into a customer provided container. There are still marketing, markups, and transportation costs of course, but at much lower per unit percentages. And that's all without even considering the effects of supply and demand and local/regional/national economic conditions on prices.

Tom S is hunkering down. Where did that word come from? Hunkering. I have never heard it used anywhere else except for hiding from hurricanes. The weather men are always wrong here in Florida and they are now showing the path of the eye passing right through my yard. I hope they are wrong. I was just out running errands the traffic is a real problem. The line to get on the freeway was miles long. I went to Walmart and there was a few hundred people in line to buy water. All the toilet paper, paper towels and paper plates were sold out. (what the heck)? "Honey a hurricane is coming, better stock up on toilet paper."
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Well, it's beginning to look like the eye will stay out to sea, until it brushes Eastern Florida. The Palm Beach area looks like ground zero.
The Gulf Coast may be ok.

Where did that word come from? Hunkering.

I've heard it many times (even used it a time or three), and I've never been near a Hurricane (Himmicane??). From the Cambridge dictionary: "hunker down definition, meaning, what is hunker down: to sit down on your heels" -- I also saw definitions on the web indicating it was to hide out or take shelter. The Cambridge one is what I'm used to hearing/using, though (I can't quite do that). The other one isn't a use I normally hear.

We are in southern Ohio so don't expect any problem here ;D. However our house is right in one of the paths of the hurricane. May not have a house when we get back there :(. Nothing I can do will change the situation.

I can testify that I75 Northbound was a parking lot from about 70 miles N of Ft Myers to mile marker 345 Wednesday pm. It does loosen up some N of there, but still busy into GA today.

Will and Tom S, plus any other Framily who might be in Irma's path, keep safe.  But do me a favour, turn your fans east to send that thing out to the Atlantic, we don't need it hitting our place in St Pete.  We don't have to be concerned here about Irma, but both Jose and Katie have a good chance of coming up to NS with strong sustained winds.

If I thought it would do any good I would have both airboats going..trying to blow it away, far away to the east. The latest track I just looked at from the national hurricane center put the eye over my house.  Sure hope Tom finds a safe place or is outta here.

If you haven't already gotten on the road, you might as well wait until Friday, now.
And take US 27, 98, 19 and 441, rather than the Turnpike, I-75, and 95.

We just saw on the news that everyone is jumping off the Turnpike and are now on those roads, particularly 27. The reporter was in Sebring and the person being interviewed was from Ft Lauderdale. 27 was jammed. Sebring is now out of gas (at least at 6pm they were).

We decided yesterday to stay put. The coach is full of diesel and fresh water and parked out front. We will hunker down in our little casita. Once the storm passes, if the electric is out, we will go into the coach and use the generator.

Stay safe everyone.

Local station WSB is reporting that traffic from the south is already heavy and slow all the way up to the Atlanta area. They expect it to get worse this weekend.

If you are headed this way with an RV or even just a tent, Both the Atlanta Speedway and Talladega Speedway are opening their campgrounds to Florida evacuees for free. It's parking lot type camping, but have electric, water, and toilet/shower facilities.

I rode out Hurricane Jean and Hurricane Wilma. For you folks in Florida, please remember then look at the storm. This is not Andrew, Charley, or anything we have ever seen.

Please leave. If it comes up the middle, there is no "hunkering" when 2x4 lumber and barrel tile is flying at you at 120 MPH>

I saw a guy on tv lives 21st floor in Miami. He is gonna stay up there. If anything happens I will nominate him for a Darwin award.

To those who are in an RV, I hope you will go to a shelter.  If you stay in your rv,  I hope you live to regret it. Irma is bigger than the entire state of Florida. Hurricane winds go out 70 miles from the center. That's a 140 wide hurricane. The state is only about 100 miles wide. Tropical storm force winds extend 185 miles from the center, making the storm 370 miles wide.
Since it's too late to evacuate, please go to a strong shelter.

It's not too late to head north, yet.
You can bug out first thing in the morning, and take some of the US highways up towards Alabama/Georgia. Turnpike and I-75 is still pretty tied up, but most of the other highways are running pretty good.
It will be windy, tomorrow, but you can still make better time than Irma will

I am curious,  what do all those Florida RV dealers do with all the rigs for sale when a hurricane comes through ?

Do they move them or just leave them out in the weather ?

They leave them, line them up close to build a few walls so the center ones may survive the wind.

Then they make an insurance claim on the damage. Its not possible to move them all, not enough drivers or space to put them if they do move them. Cat 4 will even blow over a 40' motorhome.  Its gonna be a mess. Maybe some deals. I talked to a guy after Wilma who said he faced all of his inventory with the tail facing the storm winds. They still got trashed from blowing debris.

Brand new Motorhome 3 miles on the odometer, only been rolled over once.

I was in these places like Florida City after Andrew.  The link is a mobile home park.

Had been up north and was returning home (Punta Gorda, FL). Stopped at Gainesville.  New predictions showed this not good.  Moved back north and west to west of Tallahassee (Marianna, FL). The county had a mandatory evacuation announced. Left the coach there and took the toad to Montgomery, AL where it has light rain and not much wind now.  Will leave here tomorrow morning and go back and see if the coach is okay or laying on its side.  I could view videos of my house until power went out about 3 hours after the eye passed and every thing looked good.  So probably everything okay.  We will wait up north for 3 or 4 days before going home.  The roads will be terrible tomorrow and gasoline is hard to get.

Winter Haven/Lake Wales, which is where we are, did okay. We lost screening on our lanai and a ceiling fan. Neighbors lost roof shingles and one pool cage collapsed. Some trees down with tree/limb debris about. Never lost power or cable.

Son in Lakeland lost power, and it hasn't been restored. Most traffic lights are out, and lots of big oak trees are down with tons of debris everywhere. I think Lakeland got hit pretty hard. Rene, I know you winter in Lakeland. We were there earlier today, but don't know how Sanlan came out. We drive into Lakeland on 98, but didn't think to look that way. Since it's back off the road, we probably coudn't have seen anything anyway.

It was Frances or Jeanne in '04 that was headed north and did a loop around out at sea and came straight into Florida. Let's hope Jose doesn't do that as mentioned by Lars. Now, that would be awful.

That was Francis.
We were living in Port St Lucie, then. Was planning a trip to California for work training, and saw it go on by out at sea, so I got on the plane to go on to CA.
Changed planes at Denver. Saw the Weather Channel showing it starting to loop around. Called the wife and said to keep an eye on it.
Sure enough, by the time I got to San Jose, the thing was turned around and headed right for St Lucie.
She and grandson had to put up the window boards and prepare. I spent the week in Santa Clara, while they got to spend it with Francis. She's never let me live that one down.

Many of the permanents left due to the storm, and those that stayed have landlines only, and power & phone lines are down.  I finally tracked down a friend from a few streets away, and was told that there was no flooding, and minimal debris.  So, I'd say we did remarkably well, he will go over and check it out tomorrow.
Still have not heard from/about Tom or Will.  Hopefully, all is well.
My only problem is that I borrow the neighbour's compressor to blow out the water at the cottage.  Well, he was busy last Tuesday, and I picked it up while off balance, and now my back is paining me.  So, it is Aleve, and beer and who cares.

We are in Milledgeville, Ga and had no problems here but power was out and a lot of trees down in the surrounding area. At home in FL, we have eight trees down but the house and shop is fine. The farm is fine with some water  damage . Leaving tomorrow going home.and the kids homes are also good.

Got a Email from a Sanlan employee. She was at home because she had a generator. Sanlan has no power, water or sewer. They had multiple seasonal RV's and park models with major roof damage. Roofs blown off or tree down across sunroom. They also had many Rv's with moderate damage.

We went to Stone Mountain, GA and stayed in their RV park. At the height of the storm the park left a note on my door that for safety we could go to the middle of a large parking lot and wait it out.  Our site however had no big trees around so we elected to stay in the site.  The park did lose power at about 2 PM on Monday, and a power pole came down taking out the power. We are still without power tonite, but have sewer and water.  Since we are gen equipped the power is not an issue. Other than continuous steady rain, and a few gusts of wind, there was not much of the storm to worry about up here.

Jane and I made it, we thought for sure our roof was gone, RV made it and only damage was to our banana trees and one palm tree that I didn't like anyway. Flooding in neighborhood but not to us. I haven't heard from Tom, just to busy trying to get back to normal with power and cell towers. first pic is of side yards, this flooding goes for much farther than can be seen in the frame.second one is Boggy Creek that runs thru the back yard, the Picnic table is usually 5 ft above the water level.

Damn, what a mess Will. I drove over to have breakfast at Boggy Creek Resort yesterday and the parking lot was full of downed branches and pretty much uninhabitable. Your place is a mess. I have much less problems but I do have two water leaks. I must call my insurance agent this morning.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

I don't think they will be having breakfast for a couple of days. A tree limb went thru the roof of one of the back rooms and their power was still out yesterday. I Heard from some of the residents that none of the RVs were damaged. We are going over today to take them our left over water, wanted to take generator but we loaned it to one of our neighbors that still doesnt have power. Most of the permanent residents left for higher ground.

She has not written to her blog since then and the forum shows she was last there Friday the 9th.    Thinking positive she is snug somewhere and will update her blog and tell all about her adventures.

Thanks for Alabama info
