It was just a question of when...
« on: October 02, 2017, 05:54:50 AM »
My hometown of Las Vegas is the scene of horrific carnage this morning. A 64 year old man open fire on a outdoor concert and scores are dead or wounded. A literal killing field was made of concert.

Story I read (Yahoo news) was 50 dead and hundreds injured...

Other than reporting that .. There is nothing I can say. except this:

My daughter used to work in Las Vegas.. NOT at that area (She worked mostly in Paradise, NV.. Bally's Casino, but also other Harrah's Properties from time to time)   She now lives in Wyoming.

I was stunned and sickened reading that this morning.  :'( Unfortunately we will likely never know what set him off.

We awoke to the sad news. Two of our adult kids arrived in LV yesterday for an unrelated event. They got caught in the lockdown and witnessed some of the stampede, but fortunately they're all safe. Grandma Chris received the info via email.

Way to close for comfort Tom. So glad to hear your kids are safe. We were stationed in Vegas in the mid 80's. Not my kind of town but so sad to hear about this senseless shooting.

Aye, senseless it was. Since the guy shot/killed himself, we may never know the motive.

Hopefully, it was some form of medical issue....and not politically motivated!

The latest numbers are 58 dead and 525 injured.  Calls for blood donations.  Awful, awful, awful.  Please fly your flag today to show that we are united!

We were at home and I misread my watch so turned on the TV at 10:00 to watch the 11:00 news.  The reporting was just starting and I watched until after 1:00 a.m.  At that time there were 2 dead and 100 injured so it was a real shock when Jerry awakened me this morning to 50 dead and 400 injured.  It was Metro's worst nightmare but about a month ago their annual training session was for a similar event so it was pretty good response on their part.  So glad it was "only" one person!  The local country radio station is the one we usually listen to and they were sponsors so had a crew there.  Our regular "morning guy" was in their tent and another on his way to Mandalay Bay for an after party.  They're double-team today which is good because both are pretty shaken.  The one who was in the station tent said when he got up this morning he couldn't stop crying.

We are in Vegas and watched the news until near midnight. When we went to bed they didn't have the numbers like this morning. When we woke up we had multiple calls and texts on our phones from family and friends on the east coast. It wasn't until I called my son. that I learned the magnitude of the tragedy.

We can't do half staff but ours has a black ribbon attached at the top.

I have to say the local country radio station staff has had a really tough couple of days.  Every now and then tears flow.  A lot of people call in to talk because they need to talk to someone who also was there.  It was touching that a parent from Columbine called to offer support.  The Strip is still closed near Mandalay Bay and people still can't get to their belongings and cars that got left behind.  It's really hard for the people who want to go back to their distant homes.  One girl from Los Angeles is trying to figure out how she can get her car back to L.A. without making a return trip.  They are providing some shuttle services to help people get home  You really don't think about the practical aspects of such an awful happening.  The Sheriff and a L.V. City Councilman set up a go fund me account to help the victims.
