I was a full-time RV-er from 2004 to 2015. I often heard about a boon-docking location that was (I think) near a military base (Air Force?) in a Western State (CA, AZ?) that was popular with veterans because of the ready access to health care. Any one familiar with this? All clues/hints appreciated.

I don't know about boondocking, but there are numerous campgrounds available to vets. Do a Google search on "fam camps".

There is a VFW post near Yuma, AZ which used to allow boondocking.  This may be the place you've heard about?  I do not have current information.  There is a Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma which doubles as a civilian airport. There is a V.A. Clinic in Yuma.  https://va.gov/directory/guide/facility.asp?id=801.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Air_Station_Yuma

There is a spot of BLM land near Holloman AFB New Mexico.

Leave Alamogordo going toward Las Cruces

Go past both gates to the base.

On the right hand side, there is a small sign saying "Wildlife Viewing Area" about 4-5 miles past the last  (south??) gate

Vandenberg AFB on the Central Coast of California (Lompoc) has a fam camp open for active or retired military. $10 for dry camping and $22 for full hookups.
