Took a friend in to have a kidney transplant. They called him at midnight here in Fresno and said be at the San Francisco hospital by 4 am. We made it in 4 hours.

So be prepared to go at an instant any time of the day or night. They don't wait, if you don't show up someone else will.

Sure wish more people would donate organs!

God bless you for taking him and hope it turns out well for the friend. We have a niece who was near death before getting a liver transplant. Two years and she's doing well.

Fantastic!  Our 23 year old daughter needs a new liver.  She's been on the list for 5 years and was born with a rare disease.  She's doing fine now but the wait is excruciating emotionally.

I can appreciate the situation. My mother was on dialysis for seven years. At the time she was 72, and had given up hope of getting a kidney due to her age. There was a terrible accident in Toronto that killed five people. Lucky for my mother, she was a match and we got the call at 2am to be in Toronto for 6 am. Its a two hour drive in good weather. We made it in time and the surgery went well. Five years later she is doing well, and enjoys life much better than having to take dialysis three times a week for four hours each session. I hope the surgery goes well. Your friend will have a much better quality of life with his new kidney. Bless those who have given their organs to enrich others lives. Cheers

It was just a year yesterday since he got his kidney.  Doing really good and has been able to travel over the west now because he doesn't have to go in for dialysis.
And he now works as a volunteer two days a week at the dialysis center where he used to go for treatment. So that's great because he can give encouragement to those who have kidney problems. He's seen it all.

I'll tell you what...if you've got your health you've got everything.

In your first post here you indicted that you took him in for the transplant yet here you say it's been a year. I'm sooooooo confused.  ;D :D ;)

There is no easier way to have someone remember you daily for the rest of their life than to give the gift of life. Being an organ donor is the last great thing a person can do. My donor was not registered but her parents signed the papers and here I am 5 yrs later, just wish I knew who she was.
4 hours must be for kidneys, when I was on the list for lungs they told me 2 hrs or less. I found out that if you call the highway patrol (Florida) they would arrange an escort. We didn't need it since it was a midnight call and I-4 was not busy, surprisingly our first call was a good match. The odds of there being a good match is only 2 out of 5 calls.
Good of you to take him in Arch, my BFF offered to make the run to Tampa for me in his vette. I still don't know if it was because we are good friends or he just wanted to run the vette full out.

They're not mutually exclusive though are they, Meade? ?

His new kidney was on an airplane coming from the east coast so I guess that bought him some time, however brief.
