Transfer Switch problem

Hi everybody....2006 Alfa See ya...batteries won't charge while generator running.They charge w/ shore power & alternator...Both Alfateers & mt. home repairmen said tranfer switch box bad. Real bitch to pull both metal fuse boxes, get under fridge n change out transfer switch box..done. still won't charge with gen. running& no power to coach.????
 
Could it be as simple as a tripped circuit breaker on the generator?

 
If you have no genset power anywhere on the coach, e.g. no a/c, no charging, no outlets working, then its almost surely either the transer switch or the genet's own breaker.
 
Thank you Gary, i have flipped gen breaker on & off several times to no avail & the gen fuse looks good, though i could still cheaply replace it since i just replaced Transfer Switch box at $210....I'd bring it to shop in Phoenix area but working & live in full time. Not sure what else to try.....Anyone have decent honest RV repairs in Phoenix area? When my job is done here.    Robert

Wouldn't that be a problem with inverter / converter not charging batteries. Transfer switch is working if you have 120 volts then its inverter.


Just reread original post so you don't have power with gen. Yes I would say transfer switch. When mine went bad I could manually engage it.
 
Assuming this is a 50 amp 2-roof A/C RV (I think most Alfa's are)  Here is how to test the Transfer Switch.. NOTE on an Alfa there should not be a 12 volt transfer switch only the 120 volt side of life needs trasnfer.  Technical reasons on request.

Turn both A/C's to FAN mode (Or all 3 if you have 3) Just fan mode.

Do they BLOW?
If the answer is yes than your AC system has been tested up to the breaker box. (NO Further)

Fact: MANY RVers have a few screws loose.... Not a joke.

IF the screw that holds the wire clamp on the circuit breaker marked CONV is loose the wire may fail to make contact, likewise teh White and Bare wires that go with it.
A bad breaker may fail to make contact (Same breaker)
A breaker that is slightly out of position may fail to make contact.

Finally.. As I recall Alfa See-Ya was a "High end" RV (Very high quality) Many High End RV's have a converter like a Progressive Dynamics Wizard controlled unit (Mine is a 9180 with optional wizard).

OR... A Inverter/Charger..

After 12 years.. My Converter failed. I put a new one in last Halloween.

(However you said they do charge on shore power)

NOTE: on mine, if I use the converter to charge batteries must be CONNECTED
If I use the inverter (Which is down for repairs) that switch does not matter.
 
The inverter definitely works. Batteries r fully charged on shore power n full a/c w/ inverter. But when disconect from shore power n gen on, no power to coach, no charging batt per light on panel over door showing batt charging.? As you all know, its tough to bring to shop when living in rig full time. Can't leave it unless pay for motel.But i would just to have expert look & fix this.Tough when back on road w/o gen to charge . Though batt will charge on RV alternator....??

You just replaced the transfer switch, and now it doesn't work?  Did it work initially and later quit?  Sounds like a possible installation issue.

In any case, get a voltmeter and start tracing the 120v power from the genset to the RV's load center (breaker box).
 
When I replaced my transfer switch last year the gen side did not work on thenew one.PPL were I ordered from replaced it  and all was good
 
This time you said "on generator NO POWER TO COACH".

No power, no 120 now 12 A/C does not work on blow, Microwave dark (of Mickey wave may be inverter powered) Fridge switches to DC?

Are you sure the generator is A: Generating  B: Circuit breakers SET (ON not off)

On my Generator and most of the ones I've seen "Tripped" is the same as OFF, there is no "Center means tripped" indication like on the house breakers.
