Las Vegas/Clark County has begun the final phase of Project Neon which is the widening of I-15 at the "Spaghetti Bowl" where it intersects with US 95 and US 93.  The road has been reduced to two Lanes and ramps have been changed resulting in very long delays, especially during commute times.  Drivers are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.  For example, if you're in Pahrump and want to go north don't both driving down into the valley to reach I-15; it's easer to take NV 160 north to US 95 and route from there.  I feel sorry for the long distance truckers who need to meet schedules....  This phase of construction is supposed to last through November (fingers crossed).

Ardra,

I'm planning on driving through Las Vegas to Bonneville for Speed Week in August (fingers crossed, looking for a dry spring!). Will be coming up through Boulder City on 93/515. 95 intersects just west of Boulder City, is that to where you're referring? Or are you talking about where the multi-lane 95 splits off west of downtown LV?

Either way, I'll be looking for the shortest route from Phoenix to Wendover, UT and my current plan is 17/93 to Crystal Springs, then 318/6 to Ely, then 93/93 Alt to Wendover. any further insight your can offer is appreciated.

Sun2retire, You should be ok depending on lane closures... check this for the latest info when you travel through. http://ndotprojectneon.com/

If traffic is a little frustrating feel free to stop at one of our popular venues and make a contribution to our economy. We appreciate it!!  ;))

It's the main I-15 / I-515 / US 95 interchange at downtown  Las Vegas.  The only way around it other than city streets is to take the 215 beltway freeway west around the city from south of the airport until it rejoins I-15 at the Las Vegas Raceway north of town.  This probably doubles the mileage to get through Las Vegas.

The 215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway was locally funded, so it carries the blue Clark County road badge, not the more familiar US or State route signage.

Edit: Right now, the narrowing to two lanes is happening on I-15 north and south through the interchange, I-515 and US 95 are relatively unaffected.  But this may change as construction progresses and people shift from taking I-15 to detouring via the other routes.

I can?t afford to stop!  ;) Thanks for the link. The only option I see would be to get off around Boulder City and run around Lakeshore and surface streets towards Nellis. Not sure that?s worth the hassle.

Lou is correct.  The Spaghetti Bowl is the huge interchange near downtown.  Coming from the Boulder City area you can take I-515 (which is also US 95/93) north and get off at Eastern Ave, go north on Eastern, zigzagging through North Las Vegas until it joins Civic Center Drive then to I-15 at about Cheyenne.  We used Eastern one time just to see what it was like in the motorhome and it's slow but a wide road and a possibility for the duration of this construction.  And, yes, Wendy, they're saying LATE November!

By the way, there's also construction in the western Boulder City area.  They're constructing the new I-11 freeway between Phoenix and Las Vegas.  In January they were just opening new ramps near the Railroad Casino at Railway Pass which is near where US 95 separates to the south from US 93 which goes to the dam.  I see on Google Maps that the I-11 designation is already in place for the area I'm talking about.

If you're taking Lakeshore, I'd take NV167 north through Lake Mead NRA and the Moapa Valley to I-15.  Less traffic and stoplights.  ;)

Thanks for posting this info. I am also headed north through Boulder City this week. I?m headed towards Overton. Want to visit Valley of Fire SP and planning to camp at one of the blm boondock areas. I could avoid Las Vegas all together by taking 167. Is 167 a good road?

Hi Debra,

167 goes through the Lake Mead NRA and it has an entry fee.  An Annual National Park Pass or a Golden Age Pass will cover it, otherwise it's $20 for a 7 day pass.  Last September when I took 167 I went north to south, there was no one manning the northern entry gate just south of the Valley of Fire SP entrance, and it looked like it had been that way for a while.

Coming in from the south, there are manned entry booths on Lakeside Dr. and Lake Mead Parkway.

The road is fine, mostly level with gentle grades and curves.

Hi Lou, thanks for the reply. I was in Lake Havasu yesterday but both of the spots I had in mind to camp were packed. So I decided to drive on to Overton today. Google maps routed me along Lakeshore and Northshore/167 so I went with that route. I didn?t realize earlier that this went thru Lake Mead. It was a nice drive.  I do have the pass, so no fee. I?ll probably catch Lake Havasu next spring if I go to the bluegrass festival there.

This is the first time I?ve been in this area. There?s so much to see and do it?s overwhelming.

We'll be driving to the Sept. 16-22 Newmar rally in Pahrump, NV. So this is a useful thread. Thanks.

Oldedit, where will you be coming from?  If from the direction of Arizona, just change from US 95 to I-215/CC-215 West until the Windmill exit.  Go west on Windmill and after Las Vegas Blvd. it turns into Blue Diamond which is NV 160.  It's clearly marked toward Pahrump.  If you need fuel by then, there's a TA truck stop on the west side of the I-15 interchange (northeast corner of Blue Diamond and Dean Martin Drive).  It's crowded but we use it all the time because it's convenient.  This is at the south end of the LV valley and the Spaghetti Bowl is at the north end.

Another thing to note about the US95/I-15 is that last weekend US95 was totally closed in both directions through the interchange. I think they are planning to do that again this weekend (Fri 10pm-Mon 5am) and possibly more weekends if they don't complete the work they are doing on the new connecting ramps. Definitely need to consult the Nevada DOT on possible detours.

Thanks, Ardra.

We'll be coming from Denver via St. George, etc.

I wouldn't worry about it until you're significantly closer to the event.  There aren't any good detours from the north, any that are available will add 20-40 miles to your trip.  There's a lot that can happen between now and then, so it might be advisable to use a detour or maybe you'll be able to go right on through.

Check with Nevada DOT and ask again here so people with firsthand knowledge can advise you.

In case you plan on being in Las Vegas in the near future, this construction project is now approximately 75 percent complete and it's still causing significant delays.  Some of the detours are fascinating (convoluted might be a more accurate term) when they publish them in the paper.  It's still best to avoid the area if you can!

I'll be arriving Las Vegas from Phoenix late afternoon Sunday after next on 93/515, getting off at Russell Rd, Stephanie St then 582 to the KOA. First thing the next morning I'll be departing N on 582 to 515 to join 93 north to Wendover. What say you Las Vegas experts, am I going to avoid the mess?

I'm sorry I missed this message before and wonder if you've already made the trip north from KOA.  Your planned route would take you right through the Spaghetti Bowl (I-15-US95-US93 merge).  If you've not done the trip yet, I recommend surface streets such as Nellis Blvd. or Pecos to meet US93 farther north.  Today, for example, I-15 is closed for a couple of miles between Spring Mountain and Sahara so everyone is taking alternate routes.  The farther you can be east of the Spaghetti Bowl, the better!  Safe travels!

I've already gone north, had no problem. Reversing course arrive LV Sat evening, leaving Sun morning
