Traveling from Michigan to S.Carolina, all the rv parks will be closed for our first night were do you stay rest areas?

Hey Alpena Jeff were neighbors I am leaving from Tawas.
Thanks for the idea.

Hey neighbor!
Try google earth to give you an idea of the layout. They have 4-5 slots for rv parking. It's tight if you have neighbors. We were alone so put slides out and had a nice quiet night. It's roughly 75 steps to the Cabelas door. How fun is that!
They do have a pay dump station, $5 I think. Potable water as well but it's still freakin cold up there and it wasn't de-winterized yet.
Peace, Jeff

Hey! My first "campground" review. Look out now!
Floyd, when you get a chance, tell us a little about what you're hauling. Add to signature line through your profile. It makes it easier for the smart ones here to help you out when questions arise.
(See mine for reference)

Don't forget about Pilot/Flying J. We stop for fuel, spend the night. Sometimes they also have a Danny's so we can get a quick meal. Plenty of room.

Check to see if there are any Casino's with RV parks en route..On our annual trip to Florida a casino roughly 1/2 way fits our needs perfectly..always an open restaraunt with facilities even though the park is not officially open yet!...

I've stayed at Rest Stops as there is nothing closer to the highway.  ;D

The trick is to stop early like 5-7pm because the trucks fill up the slots quickly as night falls.

The downside is NOT all rest stops allow parking overnight.  However I have never seen anyone kicked out.
The other downside is the noise from the truckers as most leave their engines running.

IF there was a spot less than a mile off the highway and there was a lot of room to turn around I would do that.

Some campgrounds along the major highways are open all year, particularly some KOAs.

I don't have the time or inclination to search but there are 4 season campgrounds out there.  Maybe Michigan - Ohio are different.  I found some last winter going from Massachusetts to Florida and back in February.

Coshocton  (sp?) KOA, Ohio, open year around.,  sorry wicked tired, one minute search.  KOA should pay me.

When I came through there my logic was temps are below freezing at night. If I could find a campground open on my route, which I didn't, they wouldn't have water, maybe not sewer either. Why pay for that when other options are available at no cost?

Valid concern.  My concern was DW so having power to run space heater over night and furnace as needed was important.  TV and movies are a nice comfort as well.  We could bust out the generator but that can be a hassle on cold winter night for fast stop over.  I could get by in any ol parking lot but happy wife...
