Question on Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge for Diesels

I was speaking with a nice gent the other day who has owned diesels for years, who seemed to feel an exhaust gas temp gauge is well worth for those towing or hauling heavy loads to have and monitor.  So I am curious what other diesel owners experiences with this are. Thanks.
 
It's probably interesting but not essential in a stock engine.  They're set up to run safely as-is.  You really only need to keep track of the exhaust temperatures if you've added a performance chip or otherwise increased the engine's fuel delivery.

High exhaust temperatures mean you're not burning all of the fuel in the cylinders.  There's so much fuel that it's still on fire as it exits the exhaust, which can cause excessive heating of the head exhaust ports and manifold.
