We have a neighbor who has a 2015, 4 cylinder Chevy Equinox and she asked me if she could tow a 2,250 pound pop up trailer.  She says her book tells her that she can tow up to 2,500 pounds.

I told her that I thought she would burn out the transmission, and I wouldn't do it

I would like to know the general concensus what others think ?

Can it?  With a stripped truck and a single 150 pound driver sure.  But add two people, food, clothes and other stuff and its going to push the limits

Have her look at some of the smaller pop ups or nice teardrops instead. Remind her that most states require trailer brakes on anything above 1500 pounds. There are a few states that go higher, but not many.

You are correct.  That 2500# tow rating assumes the car has no options other than Max Tow, only 2 passengers at 150# each and a full gas tank.  In the footnotes in tiny print, it adds the weight of all options, all cargo and all passengers over the 300# allowance must be deducted from the max tow rating.
