Today I get to pay sales tax (8.25%) and register my new coach. We budgeted the event, but it still stings to write the check.

Hi John,

I'm sure just about everyone here can feel your pain. Big dollars out of the pocket. I wonder why they can't give a bit of a better tax rate to people buying big ticket items who have paid taxes all of their life, and deserve a break after retirement. Of course that would be asking too much for a government entity.

Even buying used as I did, we still had to bite the bullet on the taxes and is just a part of owning. I like to look at it this way, over a period of ten years or more, it is a manageable figure for having a lot of fun.

A few states do have a cap on vehicle sales tax or vehicle personal property taxes, but in most places the attitude is that if you can afford high-priced items, you can afford the taxes on them as well.  Looking at it that way, why should those who buy expensive toys get a tax break while others pay the full on their every-day needs like clothing, gasoline, home appliances, etc.?
Now if you proposed a reduced sales tax rate for all retired people, no matter what the item was, you could probably get more traction with the idea. In any case, you & your neighbors are the government, so start a campaign in your state and get your representatives onboard with it.

Wow!  8.25%.  I live in Waxhaw, NC and I think, as someone said, we have a max of $1500.  Which I paid.

Mine was a tad under $4000 for sales tax and that was with a trade credit in South Dakota. Just got my registration renewal $850.

Real OUCH   :'(

It's not the money they take from me that I view as the problem....it's how they manage to waste it  :-[

And, as I see it, taxes should NEVER go up.  As the cost of goods and services rise, the tax money rises with it because it is a percentage, therefore, they already have a built in raise.

Ouch.  IIRC, you purchased a rather high end super C.  Stings is stating it kindly.  Oh well, hopefully you'll have many years of enjoyment with the new motorhome.  Then you can amortize that cost against those many years.  ;)

WOW!!! $19,586.87 Sales Tax... $5,516.99 First Year Registration.

So now the check writing is over, I had the Air Force One system installed on the coach and Jeep. Time to enjoy this purchase.

At my conservative estimate hoping to enjoy this coach for at least ten years, it will cost me approximately $30,000.00/year to own the coach. That takes into consideration the cost of the coach, sales tax, and annual registration. Fuel and camping expenses not included. Fortunately I was able to pay cash, so I have that going for me...  8)

It is my daily duty to keep my elected officials on their respective toes, and this June and November I will be in the voting booths.

Just run downtown tonight to a casino and win enough to cover the check. Nothing to it!!

Years ago I went to a casino with my paycheck, I was going to double it. I ate peanut butter and and pasta that week. It also broke me of the need to try again.

I'm glad to know there is someone else who recognizes Casinos have an unavoidable advantage. I'm continually amazed at the people who always allege they won when they discuss it. Apparently they think we'll believe the good fairy built all those magnificent structures!

Exactly!

Congratulations, I think.  What makes it worse is that the tax is based on what the MSRP was not what you paid!  Anyhow, enjoy it I am sure you worked hard to get it!
