I ha d s 2028 carado Banff, made by Hymer, , formerly roadtrek, and when I plug the van into hydro, turn on the inverter, it makes loud clunking noises, not clicks like one would expect.
What could be wrong?

Which inverter (make/model) do you have? Some higher-capacity ones could 'clunk'.

The inverter (if that's what it is) may be engaging its own transfer switch to start using shore power, while the main coach transfer is also shifting to shore p0wer.  That could be two "clunks".
