So I?m in the process off gutting and assessing water damage to an ?84 Road Ranger trailer that I bought. We?re in the process of taking the siding off. In this process and due to its age, it?s kind of ruining the siding. The previous owner put putty all around the edges to ?seal? it and make sure no water damage occurs... how wrong or negligent he was? we?re trying everything to get the putty off but it?s been a super difficult process.

Is it a crazy idea to want to replace the siding? If we did would we have to use sheet or corrugated metal and cut to shape? What would the cost be on something like that? Would we need to seal seams if we couldn?t get pieces as long as the trailer? Anyone else ever attempted to do something like that?

Guessing it has corrugated aluminum siding, probably painted? You generally buy it in panels and cut to length, but custom cuts are available too. Here are a couple sources you can get pricing from:

Yea I?ve looked at those from other topics posted on here and I don?t think I want to spend quite so much? it looks like it is metal but it doesnmt have the smooth waves of corrugated metal, it have the traditional style of RV siding.

If I want to go with corrugated metal, should I lay it horizontally or vertically? What/how should I seal the seams between panels?

All the traditional RV siding I've seen is corrugated, although there are several variations of that. The Hemet & Interstate websites show the various profiles, but the ones I see there look somewhat flatter than common RV siding. But if none of it matches yours, then maybe no-go.  And yes, replacing it all gets pricey.  Maybe makes that clean-up job seem more worthwhile?

What are you using for a solvent on that putty. Most putty-like sealants loosen with mineral spirits and that is very safe to use, but maybe yours needs something  stronger? Really strong solvents remove paint, though, so the choices are limited.

Well right now we?re trying a caulk remover but not having much luck. I will look into the mineral spirits, and we haven?t tried any kind of paint remover yet. We?re  going to repaint anyway, but I didn?t know if the paint remover once it removed the paint if it lessened the intergrity or the siding already.

The main reason why I?m looking to replace the siding is because in taking all the staples out they?re really hard because they?re rusty/really stuck in due to the trailer?s age. I don?t mind buying sheets or corrguated metal roofing from a store like Home Depot and cutting to size, but I don?t quite know how that would affect the total  weight of the trailer.
