I-5 Closed from Redding to Mt. Shasta Due to New Wildfire

You're right, Lou!  I wasn't thinking of that route because the I-5 closure is often linked to snow conditions and during those times the CA 299 route to the coast is often closed too.  Thanks for the correction.
 
We made that trip twice each direction this summer. The first trip, late June, there was some smoke around Redding from the Carr fire , but no visible sign of the fire or fire damage. When we made the second trip in early August, the smoke was worse, and all the buildings at Hornbrook (where the agricultural inspection station is) were burned to the ground. That area just can't catch a break this year.

The fire spread so rapidly that big rig drivers who couldn't turn their trucks around abandoned them to burn up on the highway and fled on foot:

There was a sizeable fire near Cave Junction earlier this summer as well. 299 was closed for a few days IIRC.
