Back When....
« on: September 24, 2018, 05:41:43 PM »
My wife and I don't like any camping/outdoor chair we've ever bought or sat in.  So the other day we were lamenting "what happened to the good old cheap aluminum chairs with the woven strips?"  Now I must say cheap was the name of the game but they were SO easy to throw into the car and lightweight to carry.

Well, we found some on line and purchased.  Actually made in the USA too!  While they weren't cheap, we are hoping for something very lightweight and easy/foolproof to fold.  We'll let you know how they work....should arrive this week.

Now on to the question:

What do you remember from days gone by that were wonderful, you'd still buy if they sold it, but you can't find anymore?

I have one of those old aluminum coolers, I think was made by Coleman. It belonged to my grandfather, and Iím 63. Plastic stuff definitely has its advantages, but definitely not heirloom material to pass down to the next generation.

Toastettes.  Like a pop tart, only better.

We've been wondering about the zero gravity chairs that seem so popular but I don't want to spend and find out I hate it.  And the fold ups that come in a sack are too hard to get out of.  Got a directors style, hope I like it.

We love our zero gravity recliners, but they're definitely not light weights like the kind Kurt's referring to. If you see one in a campground, you might ask the folks if you can try one out.

Dutch, we have some zero gravity chairs.  Of all the chairs we have, we like them the best but the two downsides are weight and size.  They are very comfortable though!

Grashley, I thought I was the only person who missed hard licorice (maybe DW brainwashed me?)!  Loved that stuff!

Scotch Buckets I don't recognize.  What was that?

Pizza Hut 30+ years ago was much better than the product they put out today.  A lot of restaurants lose their quality over time as they seek cost savings.

Pizza Hut 30+ years ago was much better than the product they put out today.  A lot of restaurants lose their quality over time as they seek cost savings.

Amen! I got hooked when I was at Kansas State and there was a Pizza Hut (not their current store design, it was just in a row of stores) near the campus -- great stuff then, and toppings weren't nearly as sparse as today.

I miss King's Food Host, which I first encountered in Topeka, KS in the mid-60s. Outstanding double cheese burgers, Cheese and Tuna Frenchies (mmm-mmmmm), and an electronic ordering system (speaker/mic at each table), rather than wait staff, though staff did deliver orders to your table.

And restaurant chains weren't the common thing you find today, so in Evansville, IN, Austin's "Drive Up" Restaurant had hush puppies and a pork tenderloin sandwich that was "to die for," way bigger than the bun, and never any gristle. The Dubl R Drive In had pizza burgers and outstanding onion rings. In Manhattan, KS, besides the Pizza Hut, there was the Dugout Bar and Grill, which had marvelous hamburgers and garlic fries.

In fact, I miss drive-in restaurants in general, in spite of Sonic being a drive-in, but not that great. I miss movies that I could enjoy watching (no blood and guts, no cussing, a general code of content that was decent) and drive-in movie theaters to go with them.

Speaking of drive in restaurants we had Steak N Shake. The servers would come to you car on roller skates. The best were the mom & pop hamburger places. Burgers cooked to order on the flattop grill and great footling hotdogs where the bun was grilled on both sides.

A&W Root Beer.  The canned and bottled stuff just isn't the same as the old fashioned mixed stuff you used to get at the drive-in.
When you find A&W at the fountain at a convenience store today, I don't think they have the syrup/water ratio adjusted right, either.

I've looked on Amazon, eBay and Walmart... but no luck. Plenty of lawn chairs but I could not find the aluminium-frame, nylon webbing style. The closest I found were the steel-frame, canvas ones, which are a lot heavier and the canvas takes a long time to dry when wet.

Sometimes when going to the grocery store I miss the less diverse selection of years ago, who else remembers when there were only 2 or 3 choices in BBQ sauce, and when the choice for ketches was Heinz, Hunts, or maybe Del Monte and that was it, today there are more than 3 types of Heinz Ketchup alone  http://www.heinz.com/products/heinztomatoketchup I count 13 different varieties of Heinz Ketchup, including at least 3 different types of hot ketchup.

This variety makes it impossible to shop for someone else, no more hey while your at the store will you pick up some ????? for me as to get the right one is a dice roll, Ok you want  "Better Oats" brand oatmeal, do you want bulk pack, individual pack or 100 calorie pack, do you want thick and chunky, steel cut, or rolled oats, and this is all before we get to which flavor.

I have had a zero gravity recliner for about 3 years now, and the side cords are about ready to be replaced as I use it so much. It's the only outside chair I found that has decent support for my back and is comfortable in any position. It is wider than most chairs though. I had to create some additional space at the top of a storage bay with a wire shelf to store it so it wouldn't take up a whole side of a slide out storage tray.

It's way worth it though. I bought the longer, heavy duty model that is rated to 300#. Hopefully I will never get to test out that limit.

Franklyn MacCormack and his All Night Showcase on WGN radio ( 720 AM Chicago), who did a marvelous job reading poetry on the air late at night, and who played some nice music, too. I especially listened when I was stationed in Topeka, KS and was working an evening shift, but listened any time I could get it.

And thinking of radio, I really enjoyed the days when radio had shows like The Shadow, Jack Benny, Big John and Sparky (Saturday morning), and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet (right after school).  They were wonderful to lay in front of the radio, close your eyes, and watch the show. And Dad listened to The Bell Telephone Hour, with Donald Vorhees, and Don McNeill's Breakfast Club in the mornings. Mom listened to Stella Dallas, a soap opera.

There is a subscription service (live-365 or at least that is what is was when I subscribed) that has an "old Time Radio Channel" run by a ham from Down Under as I recall.

THey run many of those old time radio shows including the Shadow and CBS Mystery theater and more... But the cost to subscribe got too high for me so I dropped it. Do not recall if that channel was on the "Free" version of teh site or not. but the stations I wanted (other stations) were not.

Remember going to the submarine races and killing the car battery listening to  the radio. The radios had vacuum tubes with heaters built-in.  No transistors back then.

How do you watch submarine races from the car? Arenít the subs underwater?

That was the whole point. Since you could not see them that left you and your girlfriend plenty of time to *ahem* get better acquainted. I used to go to the lemon orchards outside of Oxnard to watch the submarine races when I was in high school. ;D ;D ;D
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Or, like me, he might have been reared somewhere away from the big waters. Here in this topic is the first time I've come across that phrase (sub races), but I've only been near water like that a handful of times in my life -- I'm a mountain and desert guy.

Sometime the submarine races were at the airport perimeter road. No water near there. That's just what we called going someplace to smooch.

What I miss from the old days is stuff that can be fixed. Everything is disposable now. When it breaks, throw it out and buy a new one. Some things you can fix, but it's cheaper to buy new, especially if your paying someone else to do the repairs.

I pick up broken things, out of dumpsters or alongside the road. I will fix them and then throw them away after a while. Wife says I have a disease....or a condition, but I'm trying to fix that.

Man you can say that again..  But thinking back to my 20's when I'd go up a ladder with 180 pounds of shingles (or carry 240 on flat ground) I kind of wonder.... Should I have done that???

Dark drive in restaurants with lots of far away parking and no lights.  Great for spooning but I now live in fear of some #MeToo person coming after my retirement check (and me too).  I would not look good in stripes.

I do that and it upsets my wife to no end.
My current zero gravity recliner came out of a dumpster after a couple of the cords had broken.  I fixed it and it's on it's 3rd season with me.
The area rug we have under the awning was left in a site by a camper.  We may or may not take it with us after the season.  We'll see how it holds up.
Just the other day I pulled a tent out of a trash can.  Put it up when I got back to our space and it's almost new except missing the rain fly.  It'll probably go back in the trash, as the boss says we have no need for a tent, especially one with no rain fly.  I think she's probably right on this one.
You ought to see my collection of tent pegs.  :o

Me too, but I'm finally beginning to get over it.  I still do it at home, though. Something craps out and we buy a replacement, but I keep the old one and fix it.  Having a spare can be a good thing, but if it's something that lasts for years anyway...

My suggestion is for you to leave these things for Gary and I to find and repair again, but please leave them beside the dumpster, we are getting too old to climb into them anymore.

Tent update.  Went around to empty trash again this morning and found the rain fly and room dividers for the tent in a different trash can, clear across the loop from where I found the tent last night.

Best thing I ever found was last year at the Canyon.  One morning, sitting beside the dumpster a brand new pair of Danner hiking boots in my size.  You can tell the guy bought them, wore them hiking at the canyon and then set them beside the dumpster when he left.  Looked them up online and they go for $160.

Good find, extremely lucky to find them the right size too. I got a pair of good usable Army issue boots, two sets of surgical scrubs and a set of oxygen and acetylene tanks from one dumpster. The oxy tank was also an owners tank so I got to keep it.

What kind of an idjit would throw pressurized gas bottles in the dumpster?  I don't even like to throw away the green 1lb propane bottles.
The big thing at this campground seems to be worn out bag chairs from WalMart.

I too pick up stuff from the curbside. Wife frowns upon it. I usually fix it and donate it to someone. Or I'll scrap out the metal for bait money and go fishing. We buy soda in aluminum cans for our lunches, I recycle the aluminum and use the money for bait. Keeps plastic bottles out of the landfills, and I get a little cash back.

I was shocked to find them and decided to pull them out even if I didnt keep them for myself. An acetylene bottle is especially dangerous, although not full they did have some gas left in them.
I have also found a nitrous oxide bottle (300 cu/in) in one. They are useless except to make gongs out of or giant wind chimes.

Chairs from Walmart, worn out or not, are instant colonosopy machines.  I have 3 that will be dumpster deposited next trip out.

Yeah, our hosting season is coming to an end on the 31st.  I was just looking at the stuff I've got sitting out in our "patio" this season.  Looks like 2 bag chairs, and a nice folding chair from CW aren't going to make the trip to Quartzsite this year.  OTOH, I've got a nice 9'x12' simulated Persian rug that some camper left that I'm going to try and find room for.  I've had it out under the awning for 3 months since they left it, and it looks like I can get a while more out of it.  Still not sure where it's going to ride when we're traveling, though.

Back around 1985, while driving toward home late one night on a street in South Florida, I saw a solid looking, 6 ft long  sink base cabinet at the curb side with the trash (our community picked up anything back then!). Drawers and cabinet doors all intact, but no countertop.  Hmmm, says I.  I could make a nice work bench out of that!  Went home, picked up our Jeep Wagoneer, returned and loaded it on.  Accompanied by  some rather shrill comments from my wife including terms that sounded a lot like idiot, garbage-picker, dummy and even thief!    But I got it home, reinforced the top and added an 1.25 inch plywood top.  33 years later and it still serves as the workbench in my shop (in another house 350 miles away!).   It was perhaps 10 years before my wife admitted that maybe it was a good find afterall.  ;)
