Looking at tips: The last small surgery I had they recommended that I put vaseline (or similar) on the scar a couple of times a day to keep it moistened -- said it would heal better. Six months later I can't find the scar at all, and comfort was really improved while it healed.

It works.  I just went through that with a 2 1/2 inch scar on my cheek (17 stitches) and I can't even see it anymore.

SO I'm a supremely lucky man!

Just back online after a few days in the "dark". Pretty amazing story-- thankfully with a happy ending! I've learned a helluva lot from your contributions here and look forward to many more years of learning.  :)  :))

Check with your provider and see what they advise, however it sure seemed to help me.
Thanks for the tip.  By the time I got out of ICU, my wounds had largely healed up quite nicely, even the sternum and the vein harvest site.  My problems have been collateral damage from the emergency nature of the surgery, e.g. damaged vocal cords (from the air tube), blood clot in left arm, severe bruising in the groin area, etc.  It's all coming along, though.

Holy cow Gary, we had some updates in the staff area... but your version of events sheds a lot more light on the actual situation! It obviously was NOT your time to leave this earth yet, and we are thankful for that. Of course everyone here would love to see you as active as possible, and if that means downtime from the forum... we get it! ;D Take it easy and let us know if you or your family needs anything. You've got a whole "Framily" here who supports you!

SHOO!

My compliments to the  Doctor who manhandled your heart for 8 minutes to keep you going.

That is really something!

Gary, you are participating here like nothing happened, but how are you making out overall? I'm not trying to be nosy, but I'm just being nosy. I pray everything is healing well. How's Ms. Nancy doing? I'm sure all this hasn't been easy on her either.

Welcome back Gary. I was wondering about you, as I hadn't seen you post in awhile. Thats some intense stuff, and a lot for anyone to go through. I'm glad you held strong and pulled through! Thats really wild that all you remember is them asking you for basic commands to make sure you were still with it. Anyways, as you know, listen to the doctors, and heal quickly!

My recovery is going well - the heart seems to be functioning nicely and the surgical work is pretty much healed.  Mostly I'm working on recovering the muscle I lost during 10 days of ICU plus 7 more in a hospital room and another week or so of limited activity once I got home.  I go to a cardiac rehab program twice a week and exercise on my own as well. 74 YO guys with their chest wired together can't exactly do rigorous exercise, though.

Ironically, my biggest medical problem is an open wound near my groin that wasn't a direct part of the surgery.  Apparently one of the many tubes and such I had installed chafed enough to open a skin sore and it got infected with e.coli while still in the hospital.  Worse, it went undetected till it got fairly deep, so now I see a wound care specialist every week to stomp it out. E.coli is hard to kill off once it gets outside the intestinal tract and into flesh. It's healing, but very slowly.

"74 YO guys with their chest wired together can't exactly do rigorous exercise, though."  Although my surgery was different than yours, we have the chest wires in common. For years I could feel the wires pulling on the holes they were put thru, usually when using my arms for lifting myself into a backhoe or truck, even the jeep would pull on them. Be careful with them, you sure dont want them pulling. Hopefully they used a crisscross pattern instead of a laceup like mine...constantly learning...

I have the chest wires, have had them for a long time. They never interfered with anything I was doing. I forgot they were there except after five years or so the top wire was starting to poke through. I could feel it and it was particularly a nuisance when I put my seat belt on.  Eventually after years of living with it I had it removed, and I think they removed the wire below it also.
