Do those bug-deflectors on the front of the hood actually work?

we drive through Arizona a lot, and sometimes our windscreen looks like we were attacked by a professional paintball team.

Do those bug-deflector things you install on the front of your hood actually work well?
 
I had one one a 2000 F 150 years ago and it helped a little but not enough to replace when it got broken. I just removed what was left.
