Re-sealing refrigerator access cover?
« on: April 17, 2019, 11:26:42 AM »
On our last trip out, the refrigerator access cover (white, Norcold 14x21" ish) liberated itself. I knew the plastic pins securing it were somewhat loose--old plastic--, but we had some really strong side winds while driving at night and when we arrived, the cover was gone! I felt like such an idiot.

So I bought what I thought was an exact replacement. It's the exact size and I had planned to replace just the access cover portion, not the surround. But the securing tabs on the bottom of the new cover are about 1/2" wider than the originals, so it won't fit in place without trimming.

DO you think I should just try trimming the tabs on the cover? Everything else lines up, pins seat securely. But it's hard plastic and I'm worried about it cracking.

Or, should I attempt to replace the entire access assembly/surround? The old one has some kind of old foam or sealant underneath it, so I was leary of pulling it all apart, not knowing what needs to go beneath it to make it seal.

Thoughts?

If it's hard plastic, you can use a file to trim or cut with a hot blade of some sort.

Replacing the entire frame should be very easy as long as the hole is the same size required. Just put a layer of butyl caulk behind the flange and slowly tightening it alternating back and forth.

No, sorry, have never heard of AvE.

"Skookum" is a Chinook word with Pacific Northwest origins, meaning great or strong or brave.

Ah!  Thanks for the definition.  He's from BC, so I'm not surprised.
