I don't know if this has come up before, but FWIW,  the Canadian Customs station on Highway 89 north of St Mary, MT will hold your weapon for 40 days while you visit  Canada.

Yes he is. No firearms allowed north of the border.

No firearms allowed north of the border

Just to be clear, that is  "no handguns" rather than "no firearms". You can get a permit to bring in a sporting weapon (rifle or shotgun).

The prohibition also applies to small personal defense weapons, e.g. mace, pepper spray, hand held tasers, etc. and ammunition (except for ammo used with a long gun that has a permit)

Better have a good reason for having a rifle or shotgun such as going hunting and where or a shooting match and where.  Have heard of folks that were just going to be passing through that got turned back.

Yeap - the permit application requires a statement of why you need it and if it is "personal protection" you better explain it is from bears while walking alone in the back country and not just other people!  This is definitely NOT a rubber stamp permit process designed to collect $$.

Good catch Gary, you're quite correct of course.

This really does not adress the question but it belongs here anyway.

Several years ago here in Detroit there was a convention... Baptist Preachers

Did you know Detroit is unique in all of mainland United States,  Other than Alaskan cities we are the ONLY city in 49 states and a possession or two where you go SOUTH to enter Canada  There are only 2 southern crossings in the mainland, Both in Detroit.

Well, many a preacher decided to hop over to Windsor for lunch or dinner.  The boarder agent on the Canadian side would ask "You got anything in there for protection?" (Looking at the gun, in it's holster, on the floor in the back of a station wagon) and the preacher woudl say "NO"  he'd ask a couple more specific questoins like "NO gun or anything?"  "NO" was always the answer.

Pull round back

And off they went to jail

(You see, Religion is big business so the preachers often have guns for when they carry the offering to the bank, and the car was borrowed, Gun and all, not the property of the driver who simply had failed to look in the back... Did not keep them out of jail though,  That is NO defense)
