I seem to have cranked the top an inch too high (it seemed fine) and now when I try to crank it down it just turns & turns, the top will not come down. Thought? Hints? Tricks?
Gosh I hope I haven't wrecked the camper!!

After a little research this is what I found......

1 You could have a shear pin that is broken. Your going to have to do a little digging to see whats moving when someone else is cranking.

2 Assuming it's a cable type system. You may have a loose or broken cable. Once again time to start doing some digging/ crawing underneath to check things out.

Make sure the camper is SAFE to crawl under....Chock both sides of the wheels on level ground is preferred.

Yup the shear pin in the crank is damaged and I need to hold it up with a screwdriver to get the top down. A hassle but at least it works!

Now you know the problem....You just have to figure out how to fix it.  :)

Thanks for the follow up.
